Default Dropping ia64-linux - anyone care?

Fabian and I discussed dropping ia64-linux support. Time to face
reality, we don't use it and we don't test it... Does anyone out there
care about ia64-linux?

Default Dropping ia64-linux - anyone care?

Jeremy,
Is there any possibility to see the usage statistics of the downloaded files?
Maybe, this can turn out to be one of possible ways to see the actual demand for ia64-linux. Just to have a quantitative evidence of what we are dropping (qualitative is already there, "we don't use it and we don't test it").

I do.

There are still many scientific users who have itanium boxes left
around. Even if they are migrating away from them, I'm sure these are
still used if possible.

I haven't tried prefix on an ia64 box yet. We have one with gentoo on
it already. I can use that if you need someone to test stuff.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but here is some context:

I've been developing a (math oriented) scientific software distribution
[1] based on gentoo-prefix and sage-on-gentoo [2]. This relies on the
compiler and toolchain on the host instead of building everything from
scratch. Progress is rather slow, since I don't have much time to work
on this, but it's getting there.

[1] https://bitbucket.org/burcin/sage-prefix
[2] https://github.com/cschwan/sage-on-gentoo

It can build Sage [3] with all it's dependencies (modulo jmol - a java
application for 3D graphs) on various linux distros. I don't have
access to any OSX machines other than a 10.5 PPC box, where everything
that doesn't need a fortran compiler works. I've had reports that OSX
10.6 is in a similar state.

[3] http://sagemath.org/

I'd appreciate any comments and suggestions about how to go about this.
I didn't have any gentoo developer experience when I started. I'm sure
there are quite a lot of thing I need to learn.

Cheers,
Burcin

Basically no. Even if you can see how many times a file is downloaded
from a mirror, you cannot tell whether that user is a Prefix and/or ia64
user at all.

So, the ML is not an extremely popular place to ask such a question
with only ~210 people subscribed but I can only assume that it is a
good subset of people that rely on Gentoo Prefix for $important
reasons (business, personal, etc). With that, there was one response
and you haven't even used it yet, Burcin.

Therefore, I propose to drop the keyword(s) and leave the profiles for
now. Similar to what I did for arm-linux. That way, when you get
around to trying ia64-linux, you have most of the guts and just need
to modify ACCEPT_KEYWORDS, etc.

Sounds like a fair compromise to me that sets proper expectations for
future Gentoo Prefix users.

I did actually. After writing that message, I started a build of my
prefix [1]. Admittedly, this is not the full gentoo-prefix, since it
uses the tool chain on the host, which runs gentoo itself:

burcin@... .../burcin/prefix-20111115 $ gcc --version
gcc (Gentoo 4.5.3-r1 p1.0, pie-0.4.5) 4.5.3

[1] https://bitbucket.org/burcin/sage-prefix

I needed to add the profile for ia64. After that, initial bootstrap
went fine (build portage & baselayout-prefix). Then 148 of the 150
packages required for emerging Sage built successfully. Part of the log
is at the end of this message.

The problem in the 149th package is caused by --autounmask picking a
newer version of fplll than the one Sage supports. I will try to emerge
the right version and continue with the build. Running the Sage test
suite should exercise most of these packages that are installed.

That's fine by me. I can set the necessary keywords with a
package.keywords file in the profile directory.
