Thanks Matthew, seems I'm between a rock & a hard place here. I don't
know whether to install all upgraded packages as this is a fresh install
& risk being dropped to a shell every time I boot, or download & install
FC18 where this appears to be sorted.
I'm not too comfortable with beta on a soho machine though.
Thanks for your speedy reply!

Well, since it's a fresh install, at least you won't lose much by trying.

In my observation, the F18 alpha (not even beta yet!) is actually in pretty
good shape, except there are some big issues with the installer. (Read the
release notes first.)

I have 3 machines running Fedora 17 I get the font error but I do not
get dropped to a shell I can still log in and proceed as normal is this
only affecting a certain type of machine? I run Fedora on both x86 and
x86_64. I am curious as to why this would not effect any of the 3
machines I have F17 on.

Hi LostSon, FC17 does exactly the same for me, font error & I can boot.
However, the moment I update all the packages installed, on the next
boot, it drops me to a shell and repairs a whole bunch of files.
I'm running a Dell Optiplex RG280. x86 machine. without the updating it
only has the font problem. I don't know how stable the OS is like this?
