Ok so FINALLY I've gone ahead and gotten my laptop upgraded to Fedora
17! But I now am trying to play .mp4 / .flv/ .avi movies on it and
getting an error message telling me that there are plugins missing. I
also get error messages when I try to play mp3's. Even though I get
system sounds. Is there something I've missed? I've followed most of the
online forums which recommed installing something called RPM Fusion, but
when I did that and then tried the Movie Player again I got the same
window now telling me that there's an ASF demuxer missing........(sigh!)
why couldn't the building of these distros have included this stuff? I'm
getting tired of having to search for things that should be included
with an OS, and I'm not realy bashing or complaining to anyone in
particular, but it just seems to me that these things should be
"standard" no?....I mean whether it's a $82,000.00 or a $4,000.00 car
they BOTH come with a steering wheel, brakes, windows, headlights,
brake-lights a trunk, windshield wipers etc.....those things are
STANDARD.....why cannot these distros be the same?.....if it's a
licensig issue or some sort of violaton of some technology thing, why
can't someone create the substitute?.....kind of like how they came out
with LightSpark & GNash to replace Flash.....it's just kind of annoying
is all But any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
In Advance....

I've no problems to play all video and audio formats. Configured rpmfusion-free and rpmfusion-nonfree and installed these....

Sorry for the unintentional rant...I was just "venting" because there's no one else here to talk to except the poster of Jimi Hendrix, or the small plastic version of The Joker!.....just to clarify...I have to go and install these one at a time? using yum?....(still not a master of Linux yet!....but getting there!)

Fedora 17 Upgrade...FINALLY!
the topic is not related to this issue, u should use another post so next
guy asking here the same thing can retrieve it using
google, like this:
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=installing+mp3+plugin+fedora
reading here and there, i got that
mp3 is not a free codec, so it is not released with fedora; if u want use
closed codec u should use unofficial repo like fusion
i do not suggest you to use it if u are not very very familiar with fedora
upgrades: the next upgrade u will have trouble having included rpmfusion and u
will think back to my suggestion
u suggest you to play music with other codec like ogg, it's free
regards

I'd say what you've "missed" is the philosophy of this particular
distribution, of being free from various legal encumbrances.
Yes, you can add other things to do what you want, but you're going to
have to manage that, yourself, potentially breaking the law. And that's
why Fedora doesn't include them.
The alternative is to go for another distribution, which either doesn't
care about breaking laws, or has made some form of arrangement that
makes it legal (they've sought permission to use proprietary stuff, or
paid for the rights, or have set themselves up somewhere where such laws
don't apply to them - but may still apply to you, et cetera).
Most distros have a certain ethos to them, and it's easier to go with
one that's already what you want, rather than trying to change its
nature. It's not impossible, just easier.
