While it's technically true to call such distros
"GNU/Linux", such a label ignores a large portion of the origin and
richness of those distros.
I don't think that's true. Linux is the kernel. GNU/Linux is the
(POSIX) operating system. Fedora is the distribution. Saying that
Fedora is built on the GNU/Linux operating system doesn't convey that it
doesn't also include additional software.
