I let the system sit powered off for a while and then booted the F16 DVD and it booted fine and mounted the file systems just fine.* However, when I tried to boot off the disk it got to the point of telling me it needed to do a selinux relabel and then powered off.

At the Grub screen when booting off of the Hard Disk, add selinux=0 to the kernel line.* This will hopefully prevent the selinux relabel.

Have you tried fully charging the battery to full capacity? Some laptops
don't work off of the AC directly, but off the battery, which is cont'ly
charged by the AC. If the battery is at a low level, any requirement for
high current drain such as when doing cpu intensive tasks, can exceed the
battery's capabilities if it's not fresh.

Just my .02. YMMV. Good luck!

The fact that letting it sit let it go further than before leads me to
believe that the battery was being more fully charged? I'd let it sit
overnight, and then try.

Boris,
the DVD isn't defective since it's what I used to install F16 on the
hard disk. I'm starting to believe I have another defective motherboard :-(

This might also be a problem with the power, going off of what you
mentioned about the fans for Linux vs the fans for Windows, it could
be a configuration FOR the motherboard that needs resetting, I've seen
laptops get FRIED from not having the power configured properly, and
on the other ensd of the spectrum, I've seen laptops not power up at
all, even though the battery was fully charged, and the power supply
was plugged in from the same power configureations not being correct.
Just something you might look into....

Have you checked the CPU temperature? These symptoms sound like they
may indicate that the CPU is overheating.

Did the OP check the bios settings? Something may be set incorrectly?
Reset the BIOS if possible and set defaults. If that does not work, the
MB is most likely faulty, or something else (harddisk?) got toasted too.

Hmm, does the fan run at all? This almost sounds like a heat problem.
Maybe the fan did not get connected or damaged?

The fan runs.* It starts off low then speeds up considerably then the power goes off.* I'm suspecting either the video processor or the cpu is overheating and this is causing the system to power off.

Check the inlets and outlets. The ones on laptops tend to get congested with
dust.
