Now that I'm done with Dell, I've priced out systems on Ohava, zareason,
and System76. The quotes come out with insignificant dollar differences.
Do you have any experience with these vendors?
A few comments;
1) No, I don't want to assemble my own machine from parts.
2) I plan to install Fedora 17
3) Looking at a quad core i5-3550, 8GB memory, standard "intel advanced
graphics" rather than a more expensive Radeon card.
4) 500GB SATA disk
5) mini- or mid-tower case
probably Los Alamos Computers may do.
They specialize in linux and their regular customers include
NASA / Jet Propulsion Lab, MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Caltech, Yale
School of Medicine,
Lockheed Martin, United Technologies, several U.S. government
agencies, and many more

I don't know the above-mentioned vendors, but I've had good experiences
with aslab.com. They were one of the early Linux specialist vendors. I
bought my first system from them in the mid-1990s with Red Hat Linux
3.0.3 and my most recent system two years ago.

In any reasonable-sized city, you should be able to find a local computer store that specializes in customized workstations. Just come in with your specs and brand preferences, and the store will do the rest for you.
*
It's been twenty years since I've bought a workstation any other way, and I've never had any problems, or paid significantly more. But I appreciate knowing exactly what goes into my machines, and being able to talk face to face if any problems come up.

My sister purchased a laptop from System76, this was about 2 years ago,
and it's still alive & kicking with Ubuntu on it. Even though it's not a
desktop, she DID have to call Customer Service in order to find out what
happened to the case that she ordered with it, and they were very
polite, professional, and QUICK! As for the laptop of itself, it's still
just as fast and efficient as when she got it!....hope this helps!...

The only way to get a Dell with Ubuntu installed is/was to call them up from inside the US.*I got mine in this manner; mind you, this was 5-6 years ago.

They don't, AFAIK, pre-install any version of Linux. But they do have a
full line of machines that come with no OS installed (well, I think there may
be a copy of FreeDOS.) Look at the 'N' series machines.
Canonical is still trumpeting its 'partnership' with Dell:
http://www.ubuntu.com/partners/dell
And as of May, they were pushing something called Sputnik as an
experimental project to produce Linux laptops:
Cheers,

Dell *does* have Linux pre-installed on business machines, but not on
"home" machines. You have to step up to the "N" series as Dave
suggested.
