Default Evolution loses its data.

Plaform: Fedora 17 x64

Evolution loses its data and launches the Setup Assistant.
Upon reboot everything is OK.

I don't like Windows because of its poor performances but
I am getting tired of Linux utilities bugs. Too much is
too much. I wish Fedora secondary programs were developed
with the same care Red Hat programmers designed their rock
solid kernels.

I don't use evolution. But, I do play with it from time to time.

I don't understand from your description what data is being lost, when you see the
setup assistant, and when things are restored.

Could you be a bit more specific about what/when you are seeing problems?

Use Thunderbird, it's more stable at last in my case.

I agree, that it might be annoying when instead of just using your
computer for your work you have to deal with bugs and finding
workarounds for very common problems. But as you know Fedora is a free
distribution and you can't expect the same quality as from Red Hat's
payed one. Quality has it's value. Fedora is a playground for new
adventurous ideas and software. All users of Fedora are in some way
testers and volunteers.

I guess you COULD go with Windows...just know that their latest has
flopped in a BIG way and you'd be stuck with whatever you got from
Windows 7 until the figured out a way to fix the mistakes they made with
Windows 8 & Metro

Don't know if this is important, but if he uses Evolution as an
Outlook replacement (this is what I do at work, to avoid using
Wind*ws), Thunderbird won't fit his needs, because there is no mapi
or Exchange support.

Yes, that is the case for using Evolution instead of Thunderbird.

Now, how can we help OP diagnose the problem?

1. Check that everything is ok with your home directory and it's
read/write mounted and file system is consistent.
2. Check SELinux policies (you should already have seen some alerts).
3. If 1 and 2 are positive (no problems there) then it might be a
problem in Evolution.

And that the drive/partition isn't too full.

The problem I have with the above post is that we do not know what
hardware is being used or how apps are installed and configured.
Fedora 17 is still very new and is almost guaranteed to have bugs,
faults, clangers, difficulties, etc. It comes with the territory of
cutting edge software.
I have used Firefox, Thunderbird, Epiphany, Chromium and others with no
problems in both Ubuntu and Fedora versions for years with no ill
effect. I tried Evolution years ago but not since.

I may fresh install Fedora 18 when the time comes.

May I suggest that if apps have bugs simply try some other similar app.
Or possibly go back to Fedora 16 which is more stable.

Or simply wait and the problem will be resolved.

Actually the problem with the original post is that it tells us
virtually nothing useful about the OP's Evo setup, such as whether it's
a fresh install or an upgrade from an earlier version of Evo (which used
a different on-disk data format and file layout), whether he uses POP or
IMAP or Exchange or Groupwise or whatever, whether he's using filters
and has made sure the Search box doesn't contain an invisible character,
whether he gets any authentication errors, whether he's tried running
Evo with logging, etc. etc.

I use Evo under F17 and my experience doesn't match what the OP says,
not even slightly. I would suggest that the OP try the Evolution list
(https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/evolution-list) where he might
find more focused help.

And lastly, comparing Evolution code quality to that of Fedora is a
distraction. Evo is a Gnome application, and as such is supported on
Fedora *exactly* as it is on other Gnome platforms.

Unless Exchange has SMTP relay and either IMAP or POP3 turned on and
enabled for him.
