Default F17 - KDE panel background - how to change

Hello,

I have installed F17 onto my home PC today, and somewhere along the way
changed I seem to have changed the KDE panel background. It is now
somewhat transparent, which means that when the display background
changes (I have it set to a slideshow) sometimes I cannot read the text
on the panel icons.

I have had a look again but cannot see where the panel background is
set. Could someone point me to the right area please?

Thanks,

John.

Unfortunately at the moment I don't know either.

However, you can try switching to the Oxygen Desktop Theme. I've found the darker
panel with its increased contrast to be better suited to my tastes.

After spending a fair deal of time on this "interesting" matter.....I found it
obscure/difficult/maddening/impossible.

The desktop theme definitions are kept in /usr/share/kde4/apps/desktoptheme/ . To
modify things you need to use an svg editor such as inkscape. The question then
becomes which fileS to modify to get the desired result.

I say fileS since it seems that one has to know which files to modify...and how. It
seems, to make matters worse, that there is an interaction between files located in
"default" and whatever theme you are using. If some attribute isn't defined in the
files of your theme then they are gotten from files in the default. Also, it seems,
one has to know in which order files are read/evaluated.

To sum things up..... It ain't easy.... :-(

I also did some googling on the matter and my "ain't easy" conclusion is upheld by
many others. (People in another thread may want to google this topic....they may
learn something about opinions of KDE developers... :-) :-) And cries for the
good-old-days of KDE 3.4) Hope I don't regret saying all that.....

With all that in mind.... The patch of least resistance seems to be either

A. Find a theme, even though it has a translucent taskbar, which is more readable.
B. Find a theme that give you an opaque taskbar... LIke Gaia_Recycled....which I
don't like. But who cares about my opinion. :-)

I have taken desktop decoration off, using Oxygen and no transparency.
Got grey panel, with black fonts. Reasonable enough, not the best, but..

Do you mean you've turned off "Desktop Effects"?

Yes, that would work....but of course you would lose all the other "eye candy" one
may like.

It's a trade-off.

Yes Effects... It works for me, Old like me, can't remember, why that
eye candy is for, hi.
For someone it's must, and nothing to do with usability. As KDEPIM. It
has gone unusable because of Akonadi, kwallet, nepomuk, yaks! KISS, I
want KISS!

Hello,

Well it is possible to change the panel background setting:
http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=67&t=96664

I set the 'File' option for the panel background to
/usr/share/kde4/apps/desktoptheme/default/opaque/widgets/panel-background.svgz

and the panel background is now a solid light grey (after logging out
and in).

This now allows me to read how many unread mail messages I have without
maximising the panel task (I use 'evolution' as my mail client).

Unfortunately though some tasks on the panel such as a simple bash
konsole appear quite dark, others such as evolution are white on the
grey background (and so readable), libreoffice is also a light colour,
firefox is dark. Hovering the mouse over any of the tasks pops up a
thumbnail window which is pretty much black and impossible to read!

I also do not like at all the seemingly 'blurred' writing on the tasks
on the panel - e.g. 'bash' for a bash konsole. Blurring it puts a strain
on the eyes to resolve the writing - not good at all!

So, obviously things are not quite there yet. I have no objection to
some eye-candy, the blue highlight around selected tasks etc, but being
unable to read something is obviously of not much use.

Actually setting the desktop theme to 'Air' seems to resolve the last of
the problems. Just clicking 'Apply' without changing any of the
'Detials' settings and the panel background is light grey, as are the
task icons. I can now read everything, and the task popups are also
light grey with a black border but easily readable.

John.

Doh! I knew I should have tried
