Default printer configuration on F17 ???

Hi!

I did a base (default) install from i686 DVD onto my netbook. it's
working fine, but...

it doesn't have any tools to configure any printers. so using "add/remove software" I searched for "printing" and it came up with an item "Printing Support"
and installed it.

but I still don't have any items in any of the menus to allow printer
configuration.

there is a package installed named system-config-printer-libs-1.3.9-1.fc17.i686
but it doesn't seem to contain anything obviously designed as an end-user UI
for configuring printers.

how is one supposed to set up a printer on F17?

(I suppose I could fall back on browsing to port 630...)

thanks!

Fred

Using GNOME?

You are supposed to follow the following route....

1. Click on your user name in the upper right.
2. Click on "System Settings"
3. Find and click on the "Printers" icon
4. Click on "Unlock"
5. Enter the appropriate password.
6. Click on "Add Printer"
.
.
.

# yum install system-config-printer

If you have HP printers, you might prefer

# yum install hplip

Ed:

thanks for the reply!

hmmm...

I was running Mate, but couldn't find that item anywhere in mate. I had
also looked in gnome and missed it.

so, ok, now I've found it. I unlock, start to add printer and get
a dialog that says:

"FirewallD is not running. Network printer detection needs services
mdns, ipp, ipp-client and samba-client enabled on the firewall."

I've been running Linux (fedora, RH, Centos) for years, so I hate
to sound so helpless but,... now that we're using systemd and this
new thing called firewalld I haven't a clue how to proceed.

[later] ok, it looks as if firewalld isn't installed. installing it
now. but don't know what to hack to make it startup. rebooted and
it still doesn't seem to be running.

further advice would be appreciated.

thanks again.

Ahh, OK.... My "ignorance" is based on my being a KDE user with HP network
printers... :-)

Anyway I "see" the problem. The error message you are getting is confusing since
firewallD was supposed to be in F17 but was then pulled. Apparently, they didn't
"fix" the printer configuration dialog.

So.....

Run "system-config-firewall" (which should have been installed by default) and enable
the services/posts outlined in the firewallD message.

Also, erase firewallD. It is not ready for primetime.

yeah. done. also installed some foomatic things and then when I chose
add printer it thought for a couple of minutes and found the printer
out on the LAN. it assigned the correct (or at least "A" correct)
driver to it and voila.

one odd thing, there doesn't seem to be any way to change printer
settings, resolution, etc. weird.

Ah. running system-config-printer (which I had to manually install) lets
me change resolution and numerous other things. strange that the add-printer
app doesn't.

well, at least it's now working. thanks for your patience, Ed!

I've found the "best" way to alter printer settings is to use the browser and go to...

http://localhost:631/

And administer printer settings from there.....

Welcome.....

yeah, I tried that too. but it didn't offer me a suitable printer driver,
and whatever I tried caused the printer to wake up but not to print.
of course, that was beforoe I thought to install the foomatic pkgs,
so maybe that's the reason it didn't work.

Well.... What I really meant was that that would be the place to go to define
printer defaults such as paper size, quality, etc.... *after* the printer has been
configured by the other method.

If using an HP printer, go to the "Add/remove software", search for "hplip" and mark the two that are not installed for installation. I don't know if yum will work on this one. I have this challenge all the time when upgrading to the next version; I love the challenge knowing that, in Linux, the solution is relatively simple.
