Depending on where you are coming from, you might run into a lot of issues with OpenJDK 1.6, Eclipse 3.7 and GCC 4.6 not being present in Fedora 17...apart from that it is absolutely worth the upgrade.

I've both upgraded from Verne -> Beefy via Preupgrade (i686) on a

laptop & a fresh install via Live CD x86_64 Beefy on a Core 2 Duo with

absolutely no problems whatsoever.

Via Live CD, the install is very quick indeed. Minimalist to say the

least :-) The Live CD, which I downloaded after the release date, was

still marked Alpha.

Very happy here. YMMV...

Cheers,

In this fairly long thread,
I haven't seen a single problem or dislike mentioned -
just that there are apparently "lots" of them.

Ed was referring to all the other "F17" threads.

Thank goodness.... You really didn't want the OP to send an email with a list of all
the problems (real, imagined, self-inflicted, and opinion based) that have appeared
on this mailing list so they can be rehashed, disputed, dissected, and fought over
until this thread ultimately devolved into a cavalcade of farce....did you?

How about these:
1. power down missing from the menu unless you hols down alt.
2. The handling of workspace is between clumsy to onsure. For example
when I click on Activities I currently see 4 workplaces displayed all
empty . Where did they come from and how do I get rid of them.
3. On Activity-> Applications My screen is filled with tens of icons
obscuring what I am working on. Most of the time I have to go second
step and click on a subcategory of Applications to find the one I want
or I can type the application name if I can remember exactly what it is
called. The is tedious, There is nothing as convenient as being able to
place applications I use most often in a panel at the top or bottom of
the screen. I know you can put Icons down the left side of the screen
but these take up to much room.
We could go on endlessly. I know there are addons you can install to
make things friendly. But why are they not part of the basic package. To
install a trash can on the screen and to arrange that mounted temporary
devices such as CDs and usb sticks produce icons on the screen takes a
special rpm to be installed. Tell me anyone who would want a system that
you could not tell if a CD or usb stick is present by seeing an icon on
the screen. And you respond Windows users. But we want to be better
than that.

You list a number of things you personally dislike, but Fedora 17 isn't
responsible for any of them. All of them are part of Gnome 3, just one
of the many desktop environments that you can use with Fedora. This is
not, believe me, to dismiss your complaints, merely to point out that
you're attributing them to the wrong cause.

Have you tried the "cinnamon" desktop? I think it addresses all your
complaints. I'm liking it a lot.

I've seen a lot of complaints about Gnome 3.
I don't recall seeing anything about Fedora 17.

Why don't you tell me your worst problem with F-17,
so I can judge how much to worry about it?

I don't know to who you are addressing your question. However, I believe you should
be asking it of the OP since I (and I think Frank feels the same) see no value in
generating yet another thread discussing problems which already have their own threads.

My point is, and has been, the OP needs to take all the information taken in from
this list and elsewhere(?) and make the decision for himself.

You also have see/read all others have said. You too can decide what to worry about
and what not to worry about.

Hey Woah up this is not the Caulfield cup where everyone tries to win,

When I asked about pro's and con's of moving to Fedora 17 from Fedora
16 I did not want to start yet another issue like the Gnome 3 discussion
which was not, nor had ever been, in my list of concerns. I feel
somewhat hijacked that it has been again raised.

I asked because there had been questions and discussions about many of
the component parts of Fedora 17, printing problems, Nvidia problems,
questions about ext3 vs ext4, networking, and many others.

Some general, encouraging discussion on the Nouveau video driver would
be helpful. I find it works very well with Blender3d and video
processing so have found no reason to revert back to Nvidia. No one has
mentioned that, so far, Nouveau is great.
I'm guessing that everyone else finds Nouveau functional so why
discussion about trying to install Nvidia.

Please don't get into he said, she said, they said discussions, because
I asked for advice based on the experiences of those who had gone to
Fedora 17, it is not helpful.

Please remember, as someone on list once said to me, that this is a
globally viewed list. People may be part of the list and considering
moving to Fedora.
As such can we please keep discussion to the positives and where to get
assistance if needed, everything said on list is an advertisement for
Fedora. List participants can make it good or bad advertising.

Thanks
Roger
