Default F16: GDM user list, only show GDM logins

Hello list,

I'm rolling out F16 in a enterprise (well, academic) environment, and I
need to get the GDM user list to only show users that have logged in via
GDM. At the moment it also shows users that have logged in via SSH.

I know that the new GDM uses systemd-logind to list its known users, but
I haven't been able to find out how to configure either GDM or
systemd-logind to list just GDM users (or just users assigned to a
'seat', as SSH users apparently are not).

Is there a configuration option for this? I'm not keen to move to kdm.

Thanks a lot,
Rich

Curious why you're not 'keen to move' to kdm? Best I can tell, it is
pretty nice and configurable ... have you had problems with it?

I suppose it's more that I'm trying to keep things as close to the
default as possible, as I've found in the past that straying too far
from Fedora's defaults can expose problems that wouldn't otherwise have
come up. I was hoping that there was a simple configuration option I
hadn't found yet.

I'll try to bend kdm to my will in the meantime.

Unfortunately I don't have a solution for you. I tried something similar
(disable listing any user) but the dconf/gconf voodoo (disable_user_list
= true) simply does not seem to work. So I would not rule out that there
might be a bug somewhere.

If you find a solution I would appreciate it if you could post it to the
list.

Regards,
Patrick

I've filed a bug for this: 757051

For those that are interested, here's a quick summary of how I've come
to terms with this: I tried GDM (standard), KDM, and GDM (fallback).
Here's what I see as their good and bad points:

GDM (standard)
Good: Looks good* without configuration, is default**, provides
accessibility options
Bad: Unconfigurable, shows SSH users in user list

KDM
Good: Configurable (very), remembers which user logged in to it last
Bad: Needs a lot of tweaking to look good*, non-default**

GDM (fallback)
Good: Looks good* without configuration, configurable (somewhat)***
Bad: doesn't remember which user logged in to it last, no accessibility
options

* In my opinion
** Using non-default components often exposes bugs
*** At least you can turn off the user list

In my case, I've decided to use GDM fallback mode. The only downsides
are that it doesn't remember which user logged on to it last so the user
always has to type their username (not a big deal), and that it doesn't
provide accessibility options. I don't have time to make KDM look as
good as GDM does (note, I have a gnome background slideshow that I need
to use as the login screen background).

This bug report describes how to use GDM fallback mode:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=753447 - thanks Anders!

When GDM (standard mode) is fixed either with the option to disable the
user list or to exclude SSH users (my ideal) I'll switch to it.
