Default f14 screen goes to blank backround(blue-black), no log-in window

after leaving the computer unused for some time I am often getting frozen out:

f14 screen goes to blank backround(blue-black), i.e., no log-in
window, nothing to click.
Cursor is active, can move it anywhere but nowhere to use it.
I am forced to hit power button.

nothing I can see in var/log/messages

advice?
