Default SSH ??

Is there a ssh app that will connect to a host or try to connect and
show where or why it can't connect to that host ?

what about ssh in verbose mode

ssh -v server.something.any

Have you tried ssh with the -v flag?

And if the problem is not at the connection level (IP, firewall, ...),
but at the authentication level (password, key, ...), have a look
at the sshd logs on the server, /var/log/secure.
