Default Growing frustration with Gnome Shell

I've been using Gnome Shell since the alphas of F15 and I keep hoping
that a few things get fixed. I don't know if they're general problems
or widespread. I've make a point of putting things in Bugzilla. But, my
problems are not going away.

Big problems:

1. Pressing ALT-TAB crashes the shell.
2. Once the screen blanking has been in effect for more than 2 hours
(or so) I have to use SSH to kill the shell in order to regain access to
the system.

With each yum update, I hope to see the problems fixed. So far, no progress.

Because Gnome Shell is the future of Fedora, I intend to keep trying to
use it. But it's really got to get better, and soon.

Shell crashing:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=727257
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=722184

Shell unresponsive after time out:

Maybe try another video card (one that uses a different driver).

I haven't experienced ANY crashes of gnome-shell, on 3 test desktops, so
a stable system is possible.

You might do better if you use Gnome's Bugzilla at
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/index.cgi instead. And, I question your
statement that "Gnome Shell is the future of Fedora," because I've seen
a number of posts both here and at fedoraforum.org from people like me
who still use Fedora but have jumped ship on Gnome. Yes, Fedora itself
is Gnome-centric, but more and more of its users aren't.

I'm trying not to invest any money in this computer. It's probably got
a year left in it. The card is fairly standard and I'm using the default
radeon drivers.

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV370 5B60
[Radeon X300 (PCIE)]
01:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV370 [Radeon X300SE]

it is simply UNACCEPTABLE writing a linux-desktop where you have
troubles with most video cards. there are enough of them where
no linux drivers exists and now even cards where one exists
are borked with a standard-desktop because some developers
are thinking it is cool rely on 3D-crap

sorry but this is driving on a street to nowhere!

Just for the record... My computer is nearly 6 years old, home-built,
pentium 4, nvidia NV35 (released 2002), nouveau driver. Fedora 15 is
running fine.

It's a pity the July shell crash one hasn't been triaged on RedHat
bugzilla, maybe you could submit it as a gnome bug with a pointer to
the Fedora bugzilla number.

It might be painful to do, but you could try using the generic Vesa
driver to see if that still crashes (though maybe that would just get
you fallback mode).

Personally I'm going to stick it out for a while. In the past Gnome
have introduced radical changes then stepped back a bit after user
feedback. There are some good ideas in there (along with some bad
ones).

No reason not to if, on the whole, it does what you want the way you
want it to. That's one of the great things about Linux: there's not One
True Way that everybody has to do things whether they want to or not.
