Failure to detect dependency...whose responsible?
 

Hi,

I've enabled the rpmfusion repos and have just tried to do "yum install
kmod-nvidia".

It offered to install the following....

Installing:
kmod-nvidia
Installing for dependencies:
kmod-nvidia-2.6.38.6-26.rc1.fc15.x86_64
nvidia-settings
nvidia-xconfig
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs

I don't think that is correct since

rpm -q -R -p
kmod-nvidia-2.6.38.6-26.rc1.fc15.x86_64-270.41.06-1.fc15.x86_64.rpm

returns

/bin/sh
/bin/sh
/sbin/depmod
/sbin/depmod
kernel-uname-r = 2.6.38.6-26.rc1.fc15.x86_64
nvidia-kmod-common >= 1:270.41.06
rpmlib(CompressedFileNames) <= 3.0.4-1
rpmlib(FileDigests) <= 4.6.0-1
rpmlib(PayloadFilesHavePrefix) <= 4.0-1
rpmlib(PayloadIsXz) <= 5.2-1

and uname -r returns

2.6.38.6-27.fc15.x86_64

So, I think it should have failed with a dependency error, yes?

Would this be considered a bug in yum?

It's hard to say without full yum output, but I think no.

rpmfusion just created their f15 branch and built the kmods for the
releases kernel, then a bit later they built an update for the updated
kernel you were running. I suspect you hit a mirror or checked before
they pushed that update and the kmod against the release version was
the only one available. So, not a yum bug, just a repo issue.

If thats the case a 'yum clean expire-cache' and trying again should
work soon...

The "error" persisted even after a "clean all".

So, you are saying that a condition could exist when a package would get installed even if the requirement for a specific kernel is not met?

I am confident the right stuff will get installed when the packages get up dated. But I'm concerned that any circumstance could exist that would allow the wrong package to be installed.

Please attach the full command and all output from yum so we can see
what exactly it's doing please?

OK....

I only have the attached...which was the second attempt after a "yum
clean all".


I can't do another test on that system at the moment since it is busy
doing a long job.... My luck the issue will go away by the time it is
done sometime tomorrow. :-(

What does:

rpm -q kernel

return?
Do you have the 2.6.38.6-26.rc1.fc15 kernel installed?

Yes, it is still installed. I think I have it set to keep 3 kernels.

Yeah.... Worse, that system is booted to another OS and I couldn't even
try if I wanted to....

Then thats why. rpmfusion doesn't have one for your current kernel, but
it does for the release kernel. Since that kernel is installed (even
though it's not booted), it will meet the dep.

Seriously? It looks at what you've got installed, and not what is
currently running?

You should install akmod-nvidia anyway ...

That way if the kmod-nvidia is not there for a particular kernel it
will build it.

Or you can build it by hand running akmods.
