Default how to set default text editor under Fedora 14?

export UAEDITOR=vim
export EDITOR=vim
export VISUAL=vim

doesn't work!

How?

when i use mc, and press F4, it doesn't bring up vim

In mc's own configuration disable "Use internal edit".
Then it does work with $EDITOR.
