The yum is not looking for a repo to get this mess. How can this
be? I have removed all livna repos but it does not even use them.

Hasn't this thread gotten too long. GO GIANTS!!!!

It was hard to do things on the computer and watch My Cowgirls

The way things are going on this thread , i don't know that I'd split
my attention between the computer and the television.

4th and game ......interception!!!!GO GIANTS!!!

I went the manual way. I used rpm -i rpmname and it printed a long
list of dependents and I one by satisfied the dependents. But when I
tried to load the vlc file it gave me this:

[root@localhost Desktop]# rpm -i --force vlc-0.8.6d-1.fc8.i386.rpm
error: unpacking of archive failed on file /usr/bin/vlc;478c1014:
cpio: read

This makes me think the rpm file is bad. What do you think?

Karl

Have you tried installing from source?

Try: yum --enablerepo livna install vlc
Since everyone else seems to have gotten it there, and it's not usually
on by default. So, you have to tell yum to enable the livna repo, just
for this time, and get the package from there. That might be the source
of your frustration. Good Night and Good Luck, Ric

During my tour of Geekdom, I've started three computer user groups. Once
everyone gets into a room and starts jabbering freely, miracles occur.
Every time.

The real trick is to have enough bucks on you to buy a big pizza and a
drink for someone that you wish to mentor you, after you pick him out of
the crowd. Just find the person that hugs the wall, but knows the most
about what you are trying to achieve. Sure, it's a little predatory, but
Karl ...you're on a hunt for a local mentor.

Isolated Geeks wake up nicely and predictably to someone buying them
food and praising their abilities. Also, every time. They'll knock
themselves out to prove their worth with regards to the food and praise.
Just like a Basset Hound. <chuckles> Heck, I know I do!

So, Ed. Your advice to Karl is sound, as long as he observes the social
amenities of the proposed "Mutually Beneficial Relationship".

1) Buy a BIG pizza (the REAL Geek food of choice)
2) Do as he says.
3) Do as he says.
4) Don't be a pest. Observe "Proper Boundaries"
5) Do exactly as he says.
6) No beer until completion. Soft drinks when on the computer.

A trained seal only barks for fish. Feel free to quote me. Ric

Well he's done every other conceivably not so bright thing , maybe that
will bring him full circle or maybe it will turn this into the longest
thread in history. Does anyone happen to know the message count on the
longest thread in fedora-list history?

Not to mention that Karl is using the "--force" in his rpm parameters!

I'm not going to "help" with this any more....I'm just going to sit back
and laugh...or cry...maybe both.

FWIW, I'm watching "Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension" for the
umpteenth time. Whoever wrote this is crazier than me.

Good Buckaroo advice:
"Don't tug on that, you don't know what it's attached to."
"Home is where you can wear your hat."
"No matter where you go, there you are."

Getting the movie from some dollar dust bin; $5

what the hey...at this point, does it really matter? That was what
occurred to me when I read that. Fortunately, or unfortunately, it
failed...I still haven't decided which I would have preferred. Under
normal circumstances, I root for the underdog. That is clearly Karl's

I recall giving the general OK to saying "I told you so". I don't
recall ever saying "Feel free to rub it in and here is a shaker of salt
to help you in your efforts.".

I thought the "I told you so" referred to the cross-repo contamination
that needed to be solved.

Anyway, I do want to credit you with a DFE
