..you _did_ try the radeon driver? _May_ have been on vt8, vith
your i915 X on vt7, if everything worked right out of the box

The new versions of libpng and libtiff required a rebuild of all
dependent packages.

The rebuilds are now complete and are moving from [testing] into the
main repos

Remember to fully update your system and check your unofficial
packages(especially cairo-* variants from AUR) for required rebuilds.

During update you'll notice some message similar with:

g_module_open() failed for
/usr/lib/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.10.0/loaders/libpixbufloader-svg.so:
libpng14.so.14: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

This can be ignored as in the end everything will be alright.

This can be ignored, if you use our stock cairo, and everything will be
alright, otherwise you may need to reinstall librsvg.

Clarify this for me -- are you saying that your test kernel
has 150000 kmem_cache slabs???

In other words, my Fedora 16 system has 103 slab caches:

crash> kmem -s list | wc -l
103
crash>

So your kernel would show ~150000 individual slabs?
Would that ever be done in a real-life scenario?

Anyway, if I test your patch on my kernel doing "kmem -s kmalloc-96",
which is near the end of the list, and then do some time-testing,
the difference is trivial. If there were ~150000, then yes, I can
see that there would be much less list-traversal work being done.

That all being said, your patch does have merit -- presuming that
the meminfo.cache field *never* gets set elsewhere prior to entering
the dump_kmem_cache_xxx functions. I haven't taken the time to
verify that -- did you absolutely verify that?

> p.s.
> If I create a kmem_cache called "list", a little confusion may happen

> an another option replacing list to avoid such collision.

Then don't do that... ;-)

But in other circumstances where there may be ambiguity, I've put
in the option of putting a "" in front of the name, i.e., you
could do something like:

crash> kmem -s list
ffff880079e44a00 nfs_read_data
ffff880079e44700 nfs_inode_cache
ffff880079e44d00 fscache_cookie_jar
...

crash> kmem -s list
CACHE NAME OBJSIZE ALLOCATED TOTAL SLABS SSIZE
ffff88007b895400 list 240 0 0 0 4k
crash>

That would be simple enough fix in cmd_kmem() if you re-work this part:

if (sflag == 1) {
if (STREQ(meminfo.reqname, "list"))
kmem_cache_list();
else if (vt->flags & KMEM_CACHE_UNAVAIL)
error(FATAL,
"kmem cache slab subsystem not available
");
else
vt->dump_kmem_cache(&meminfo);
}

Thanks,
Dave

It looks OK to use "if (si->cache)" in those 3 locations -- but it
would be safer to create/set a unique meminfo->flags bit for this
feature.

Hi Ionut,

If I may, I'll suggest a couple of minor rewordings:

Recent releases of libpng and libtiff have required a rebuild of all
packages that depend on them; these have just been moved from [testing]
to the main repos. As usual, remember to fully update your system and
check your unofficial packages (especially the cairo-* packages from
AUR) for required rebuilds.

The update might output messages similar to:

g_module_open() failed for
/usr/lib/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.10.0/loaders/libpixbufloader-svg.so:
libpng14.so.14: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

These can be safely ignored if you use our official cairo package;
otherwise you may need to reinstall librsvg.

Cheers.

Thanks for your comments.

A new flag called "CACHE_SET" is created to inform the
dump_kmem_cache_xxx functions that "si->cache" has been set.

As you said in the previous mail, I agree that ~150000 individual slabs
rarely exist in a real-life scenario. However, ~150000 individual slabs
are used to illustrate the improvement clearly. Think about the
situation that I install a big module with some kmem_caches. I need to
check the state of each kmem_cache related to my module once some
operations are done. So the times of execution of "kmem -s <addr>" may
be even big. Time, obviouly, will be saved with my patch in such situation.
