Default F11 ok, Only 800x600 video with F12.

There are at least two threads active talking about F12 X11 woes.

I dont want to hijack either, but Im having similar problems, so I
will start a third thread, and hope the readers of the other two
will jump in.

With F11 everything is fine, with F12 I only get 800x600 resolution.
I have various Nvidia cards (NV43 - GeForce 6600, NV44 GeForce 6200LE),
various Intel CPUs (Pentium4, Intel Core 2), so the only common variable
is the nvidia drivers nv / nouveau. The machines are connected to the
Samsung 930B Flat Screen Monitor thru a ConnectGear KVM .

Thru the F11 machine I see

---

[root@deneb reg]# xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 240, current 1280 x 1024, maximum 1280 x 1024
default connected 1280x1024+0+0 0mm x 0mm
1280x1024 60.0*
1024x768 60.0
800x600 60.0
640x480 60.0
1280x960 60.0
700x525 60.0
640x512 60.0
512x384 60.0
400x300 60.0
320x240 60.0

---

Thru the F12 machine I see:

---

[root@mythtv-fe proc]# xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 800 x 600, maximum 4096 x 4096
VGA-0 connected 800x600+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x
0mm
800x600 60.3* 56.2
640x480 59.9
DVI-I-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

---

My xorg.conf reads:
[root@mythtv-fe X11]# more xorg.conf

I have no idea what to try next.
I am telling the driver what the range of HorizSync/VertReresh rates is,
so I dont see why its not believing me.

and I have no idea what to make of the xrandr output from the F12 machine.

Comments?

The video driver did not think the other modes dectected in X11 were usable.
This might because of lack of proper EDID or some other reason.

> Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

This only says which modes you want to try and use. A combination of this
list and the detected modes is used to get the mode used by default.

If you know that other modes are valid and want to allow them to be used, you
need to add something like this (appropriate for both your video card and
your monitor or you might toast them):

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
ModelName "NEC MultiSync LCD2010X"
HorizSync 31.0 - 80.0
VertRefresh 56.0 - 85.0
Modeline "1280x1024_70.00" 129.00 1280 1368 1504 1728 1024 1027 1034 1069 -hsync +vsync
Option "dpms"
EndSection

You can use cvt or other programs to generate modelines for particular
resolutions and refresh rates. (Also you can generate different ones for
LCD and CRT displays. I don't understand all about that, just that there
are differences.) You want to make sure the sync and refresh rates aren't
out of spec for your hardware.

Do a lsmod and see what driver module is loading , nv or Nvidia ?
And the you will have to do a edit on your /boot/grub/menu.lst and after:

example;
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31.9-174.fc12.x86_64 ro
root=UUID=db7da871-8b5c-4ad9-8e9b-d7801cb4b492 LANG=en_US.UTF-8
SYSFONT=latarcyrheb-sun16 KEYBOARDTYPE=pc KEYTABLE=us rhgb quiet
nv.modeset=0 vga=318

and at the end where you see rhgb quiet put the nv,modeset=0 vga=?
the resolution you want to set from chart below, as you noticed I set
mine vga-318 or 1024x768

1600x1200 - 346
1280x1024 - 31B
1400x1050 - 348
1024x768 - 318
800x600 - 315

THANKS.
That does it.
There is some REALLY small print when the monitor is still in text mode, but
once X11 is in control, everything is great. Looks like this completely overrides
the nouveau calculation.
