Default Fedora 8 review

Hi, I listened to Linux Action Show and I really liked their review of
Fedora 8. I believe that this is something Fedora users but also
Fedora devels should listen.

They give Fedora 8 a really hard but IMHO realistic review, so please
listen to it.

You can hear the clip with the review part of the podcast here:

Any chance you can write up a good summary? Esp a list of points which
they say need improvement, and you agree with, and which we are actually
capable of improving (iow not support mp3 please, etc.).

Hans

I would have to agree with Chris and Bryan regarding Anaconda and the icon style. It seems that Anaconda has had more and more features tacked on it since its inception so long ago. Has Anaconda ever been rewritten or has anyone even considered rewriting Anaconda? The icon style issue could be fixed once the Echo Icons are finished... if they do get finished....

Pretty much all software gets features tacked on over time. I didn't
hear the review suggest anything close to a rewrite and a rewrite would
be absolutely pointless anyway

Echo would get finished faster if there was more contributors.

Re-writing something that on the whole works very well, just to fix a couple
of minor UI issues & the way it sets up grub is nuts. Re-writing apps just
because they're 'old' is very detrimental because inevitably you loose all
the years of bugfixes that make the wierd edge-cases work. 'New' code merely
looks clean at first because it never deals with the wierd edge-cases - once
you fix all the edge case bugs to get parity you're back where you started.

Well, my beef with Anaconda is similar to Chris and Bryan's as well as I have noticed that Anaconda has been getting considerably slower each release. And in Fedora 5, Anaconda made the jump from requiring at least 192MB of RAM for GUI to 256MB of RAM for GUI.

Frankly I think 256MB for GUI is fair. And yet, I think Anaconda
doesn't have NEARLY enough features -- it's too linear for my tastes.
