and too much to expect upgrades to not screw up the boot process?

In modern fantasy (literary or governmental), killing people is the usual
solution to the so-called war between good and evil. My books are not
conceived in terms of such a war, and offer no simple answers to simplistic
questions.

no - and this is a second report but unless someone invests the time to
figure out why it happened (like Peterboy reported), then there's little
to be learned (and thus nothing to be fixed).

I do not have any rescue/installation disk. Can it be done with
Knoppix? If so, how? I have tried
# grub-install /dev/sda
Probing devices to guess BIOS drives. This may take a long time.
Could not find device for /boot: Not found or not a block device.

Update or upgrade?
If he's going from Fedora 8 to 9, yeah, he should be prepared to re-
install grub.
If he's just doing a yum update on a running Fedora 9, I would hope
that nothing in an update would muck with the boot sectors.

Well, let's hope that means grub left the drive alone.
How did you install?
And, if you've booted the box under knoppix, can you mount the
partitions with knoppix?

most importantly, he would have to chroot to get it to

Heh. I'd be likely to boot knoppix to download and burn the rescue CD
image. I always seem to take the long route around.

given that the OP is asking, I would think that would be a much better
option for him since the rescue CD will automatically find the
partitions and set them up in /mnt/sysimage for him and thus, the steps
I outlined will work.
Otherwise, he will have to find the partitions, create the mount
point(s), mount them, chroot them and that is a lot more work.

And is it possible, with Knoppix, to burn a CD with only one CD tray
(where the Knoppix disk is in)?

Never mind, as I have found my F9 disk, and I could apply the trick
that Craig mentioned, and it worked well. Many thanks!
