Default problems with java on fedora 8 (has this been asked before?)

so, i need java 6 and the default install of fedora's java (not suns!!!)
is 1.5. I installed java 1.6u3 and used alternatives to point everything:

here's the jdk script I ran:
cat jdkalternatives
alternatives --install /usr/bin/javac javac
/usr/java/jdk1.6.0_03/bin/javac 1603 --slave /usr/bin/jar jar
/usr/java/jdk1.6.0_03/bin/jar --slave /usr/bin/appletviewer appletviewer
/usr/java/jdk1.6.0_03/bin/appletviewer --slave /usr/bin/javadoc javadoc
/usr/java/jdk1.6.0_03/bin/javadoc --slave /usr/bin/java_vm java_vm
/usr/java/jdk1.6.0_03/jre/bin/java_vm --slave /usr/bin/javaws javaws
/usr/java/jdk1.6.0_03/bin/javaws --slave /usr/bin/jarsigner jarsigner
/usr/java/jdk1.6.0_03/bin/jarsigner --slave /usr/bin/javah javah
/usr/java/jdk1.6.0_03/bin/javah --slave /usr/bin/rmic rmic

and the jre script:
cat jrealternatives
alternatives --install /usr/bin/java java
/usr/java/jdk1.6.0_03/jre/bin/java 1602 --slave /usr/bin/keytool keytool
/usr/java/jdk1.6.0_03/jre/bin/keytool --slave /usr/bin/rmiregistry
rmiregistry /usr/java/jdk1.6.0_03/jre/bin/rmiregistry --slave
/usr/bin/keytool keytool /usr/java/jdk1.6.0_03/jre/bin/keytool

and most things run fine, but when trying to install any java application
using a command something like this:

java -jar jedit4.3pre11install.jar

I get this error message:
java: xcb_xlib.c:50: xcb_xlib_unlock: Assertion `c->xlib.lock' failed.

anybody know what this means???
