Fedora Sound - working as root
 

As a user I got the following while running xmms:

]$ xmms

** WARNING **: Failed to open font: "-adobe-helvetica-bold-r-*-*-10-*".

** WARNING **: alsa_get_mixer(): Attaching to mixer hw:0 failed: No such
device
Message: alsa_setup(): Cannot set mmap'ed mode: Invalid argument.
falling back to direct write

*** PULSEAUDIO: Unable to create stream.

** WARNING **: alsa_setup(): Unable to install hw params
xmms: pcm_pulse.c:115: pulse_stop: Assertion `pcm->stream' failed.
Aborted

As root, if I disable mmap mode it works.
As a user (disabling mmap mode) it still does not work.

First, what is mmap mode and is disabling it ok?
Next, seems like a permission problem. What do I have the
change the permissions of to get xmms to work with an
ordinary user using Fedora 8?

are you using a custom built kernel, or one shipped with fedora 8?

Fedora Sound - working as root
 

Since the last spate of updates, it is no longer possible to use any sound or
video* device as user, only as root. Changing the permission to 666 allows
users to use the devices. I saw that on the pulseaudio thread on
fedora-selinux-list.

I hope there will be a fix soon. In the meantime, I manually change the
permission of the device I need to use each time I boot the system. Sometimes
it's not easy to figure out what device you need, though, like with the tv
card or midi, for example.

The same here. THis machine is up2dated F8 system. It is yum upgraded
to F8 from F7.

ditto, confirmed, me too, all that jazz.

Anyone bugzilla this yet? If so, got any pointers or references? I've got
one that's filed against kde, but I'm thinking this really has nothing to
do with kde (since I don't have audio in gnome either):

It's probably worth mentioning that the permissions for sound and
video devices are now managed by ConsoleKit instead of the older
consolehelper. ConsoleKit uses acl's instead of mucking with the
standard unix perms. So you want to check the acl's of your devices
using the getfacl command. As an example, you should see something
like this for /dev/dsp:

$ getfacl /dev/dsp
getfacl: Removing leading '/' from absolute path names
# file: dev/dsp
# owner: root
# group: root
user::rw-
user:gdm:rw-
user:tmz:rw-
group::rw-
mask::rw-
other::---

Additionally, the ck-list-sessions command is very useful to determine
whether ConsoleKit considers your session to the active session. If
it doesn't, it won't add you to the acl list for sound, video, and
other devices that it manages.

Finally, one bug that could be the cause of this is:

Another possibility, if you're using updates-testing, is the
pilot-link-0.12.2-9 update (as suggested in bz#411321).
