F9: Canon LBP2900 no go: "usblp1: error -32 reading printer status"
Hi all,
I am trying to get a Canon LBP2900 laser printer working under F9.
Alas, the driver is (apparently) closed and not included in the Caps
package, which might be a reason to avoid this printer, but be that as
it may, one can download a Linux driver easily enough from Canon:
http://software.canon-europe.com/products/0010177.asp
These are the latest RPMs:
2007-12-03 08:49 cndrvcups-capt-1.60-1.i386.rpm
2007-12-03 08:49 cndrvcups-common-1.60-1.i386.rpm
Once installed, CAPS automatically recognizes the printer and selects
what appears to be the correct driver:
Canon LBP2900 CAPT ver.1.5
Likewise, the printer shows up properly in dmesg:
usb 1-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 26
usb 1-4: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
usblp1: USB Bidirectional printer dev 26 if 0 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0x04A9
pid 0x2676
usb 1-4: New USB device found, idVendor=04a9, idProduct=2676
usb 1-4: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
usb 1-4: Product: Canon CAPT USB Device
usb 1-4: Manufacturer: Canon
usb 1-4: SerialNumber: 0000A380HGkZ
but if I try a test page, nothing happens. The only indication that
something is wrong is this error message repeatedly displayed in dmesg:
usblp1: error -32 reading printer status
Any ideas what is going on here?
Thanks.

Is this what you mean by "enabled"?

Thanks, Manuel. I am downloading the more recent 1.7 version. Strange that
the latest version is 1.6 at Canon Europe site -- and 1.5 at Canon Japan!
I will review the documentation tomorrow.

Kevin, thanks for your suggestions. I tried a different USB cable. No
difference. I also tried disabling USB v2 by running "modprobe -r ehci_hcd"
in case the LBP2900 had some obscure USB v2 issue. Likewise no luck. I also
tried connecting the printer to a laptop running Ubuntu 8.04, with an older
kernel than F9, 2.6.24-19. Basically the same results.
Tomorrow I will try the v1.7 version driver from Canon Asia, and see if the
documentation has any pointers.

Hi again,
v1.7 of the CAPT driver has a dependency unmet in F9:
$ sudo rpm -Uvh cndrvcups-capt-1.70-1.i386.rpm
cndrvcups-common-1.70-1.i386.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
libstdc++.so.5 is needed by cndrvcups-capt-1.70-1.i386
libstdc++.so.5(CXXABI_1.2) is needed by cndrvcups-capt-1.70-1.i386
libstdc++.so.5(GLIBCPP_3.2) is needed by cndrvcups-capt-1.70-1.i386
libstdc++.so.5(GLIBCPP_3.2.2) is needed by cndrvcups-capt-1.70-1.i386
I have libstdc installed, but apparently the wrong version:
$ rpm -qa | grep libstdc
libstdc++-devel-4.3.0-8.i386
libstdc++-4.3.0-8.i386
What package did you install to get the v1.7 driver working under F9?
Thanks.

F9: Canon LBP2900 no go: "usblp1: error -32 reading printer status"
Hi all,
Back in June, I bought a Canon LBP2900 laser printer, and tried to get it
working under Fedora. After a long break, I am back again where I left off.
I reinstalled the OS yesterday (F8, for complicted reasons) and I am again
trying to get this printer working.
As I mentioned in my original post, I downloaded the CAPT driver from Canon
Europe. Here are the RPMs I have installed:
2007-12-03 08:49 cndrvcups-capt-1.60-1.i386.rpm
2007-12-03 08:49 cndrvcups-common-1.60-1.i386.rpm
(the later v1.7 package referred to earlier by another lister is no longer
available)
Once installed, CAPS automatically recognizes the printer and selects
what appears to be the correct driver: Canon LBP2900 CAPT ver.1.5
Likewise, the printer shows up properly in dmesg:
usb 1-7: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 10
usb 1-7: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
usblp1: USB Bidirectional printer dev 10 if 0 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0x04A9 pid
0x2676
usb 1-7: New USB device found, idVendor=04a9, idProduct=2676
usb 1-7: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
usb 1-7: Product: Canon CAPT USB Device
usb 1-7: Manufacturer: Canon
usb 1-7: SerialNumber: 0000A380HGkZ
but if I try a test page, nothing happens. The only indication that
something is wrong is this error message repeatedly displayed in dmesg:
usblp1: error -32 reading printer status
Anyone have any ideas for me?
Thanks.
