OMG! Google owns "buzz" now? Good thing we did not know that in the 80's when we got "buzz"ed, what about the bees? are they going to have to bazz around now... Good thing we don't live on planets, would hate to infringe on any ones use of that word like "fedora planet." </sarcasm>

Someone needs to stop this insanity. Buzz is just a word, planet is just a word, Fedora is just a word.

Default Fedora Buzz needs a new name

Hello all,

I've been developing Fedora Buzz but before I go much further we really need
to come up with a new name for it because of Google having a service of the
same name; several people have mentioned it recently.

I can't think of anything so if we could get some sort of brainstorming thread
going here?

If you can't remember or don't know about the project, you can read the wiki
page here: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Fedora_Buzz

Thanks a lot,

What about... Fedora Hive? Beekeeper? (I like the buzz theme... we can
sort of keep that notion, but change it a bit.)

It is helpful IMO, it points out the total stupidity of the whole issue.

I never heard about google buzz before this, buzz or creating buzz about a subject has been used for decades, google is not doing anything new or exclusive there. I still say this fear is insanity.

That wasn't really helpful was it?

> Someone needs to stop this insanity. Buzz is just a word, planet is just a word, Fedora is just a word.

They are also Brands. When a brand gets established and you go into
something that sounds like that Brand.. you expect it to look like
Brand even if it isn't. If I go get a distribution with Fedora on it..
I expect it to be an RPM based Linux distribution... not a Solaris or
Windows disk. If I go to a 'planet' I expect it to be a gathering of
various RSS feeds.

Now take that back 8 years ago.. I would probably expect very very
different things. Or if I am not into Linux or RSS have any idea why
people are all upset when they come to my Fedora Planet and get
articles on planets being made into hats. However in those fields, the
brand names set certain expectations.

The issue here is.. has Google made their Buzz 'brand' or mental image
synonymous with a facebook lite experience OR is it still in the air?
Personally I think it is still in the air, and we could use Buzz to
mean something completely different and make a strong story for it.

I love the sound of "Hive"!

Thinking of planets and all, if you want to measure "impact" and
movement of certain things, something around earthquakes might be fun.
Words like seismic, seismo(graph), epicenter, etc come to mind.

And the weather on a planet can be seen as mood, so maybe something to
do with climate, strato/atmosphere, barometers, etc.

Just throwing ideas out there.

I like the sound of "hive"

I can associate this idea of social media with "echo" like hearing
what sounds bounce back. I also think about "waves" (Google is taking
all the words) as when you tap into the waters and you see the circles
grow larger and larger. "Ether" was a first approach to explain
electromagnetic waves carrying news.

And finally something dumb/funny ... "echosphere" as where the echos move.

I also agree, Hive is a really great name.

In terms of Bob's accusation of 'total stupidity:' I don't think that you
understand the reason for changing the name. I'm not afraid of any recourse
Google may have to throw but am merely concerned with creating a distinctive
identity for the project.

So the question is, as posed by Stephen, whether Google Buzz is well enough
established that people will confuse the projects. I agree that it is rather
up in the air at the moment, so perhaps Buzz is a name we can stick with.

Thanks,

Where does one go to get the rumours in a company... the
coffeemaker/water cooler. Where does one go to get stuff going on in
an area.. the coffee house. What gives you a buzz in the morning,
coffee. What allows me insight into the world every day? Coffee. My
last tie-in was that my grandfather always drank his coffee with honey
which comes from bees that buzz.

Java X is pretty much out

Coffeehouse Software did not come up with anything but coffeehouse
might be rather long.

Camp coffee is a food product from Scotland.. but I didn't see a
tie-in with software though it is rather imperialistic.

Percolator is probably too nostalgic as its how coffee was made every
morning when I was a kid.
