It seems that checking 271:a94b50696c3d broke both virt-image and
running livecd's The attached patch fixes that. I have tried the patch
for the various install methods, but would appreciate if somebody else
could give it a spin.

Patch looks good to me, and I verified that livecd installs with
virt-install. One comment though: might be worth adding a comment where
you removed the _prepare_install check saying that it breaks virt-image,
so the change isn't reverted again
