Maybe along with a micro migration guide:

git remote prune origin
git fetch origin
git config --get-regexp branch.*.merge |
sed -e 's#heads/(.*)/master#heads/1#' |
xargs -L1 git config

fedpkg could learn to do this, of course. BTW: Is there any doc on what
git commands a fedpkg command translates into?

There isn't a static doc, no. However if you run fedpkg in verbose mode
it will show you the commands it is executing, at least those that it
shells out to git for. A lot of things it uses libraries for and thus
it's harder to show.
