Restart?!?!?!
Shouldn't Zap (Ctrl-Alt-BS) or Logout work?
I can't remember ever having to restart the machine in-order to change
something in X's configuration... (including driver.ko and X.org version
updates)

It probably should, but it doesn't.

Welcome to laptops with ATI graphics. X often can't figure out how to
turn on an output if the BIOS hasn't done it already. If you boot
without the projector plugged in, the BIOS turns the VGA output off,
and that's the end of that story.
Hopefully ATI's new-found commitment to free software will help.

On some machines, the external display DAC is off unless there is an
external display attached at boot time. The controls for changing that
state of affairs dynamically are unreliable in some X drivers.
For example, I used to be able to cycle my Radeon-based Thinkpad through
internal and external displays with a function key, but that stopped
working in F8. (Will file bug soon...)

OK. I understand.

Yep. Without the specs I doubt that OSS drivers will be able to reverse
engineer the BIOS switches required to turn on the external DAC.

It's an Intel chip, GMA965. I probably could have restarted X, but
you never know. Gateway puts funny stuff in their BIOSes, and it
seemed like it would be a better idea to do something I know would
work than wait on 5 possibilities.
