Default Where do we go from here DBus problem?

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Ok, so we are where we are, not a good place to be but! What is the
best way to fix it?

After a number of days some things have been fixed others are being
worked on, but not everything is fixed.

Can the DBus security fix be reverted until its impact is fully
understood?

Does anyone have an understanding of exactly what is broken an what isn't?

Can some sort out a matrix - to be released to the community - of what
is known i.e.

affected but fixed
affected being worked on
unsure
not affected

I think this would be useful for the obvious reasons not least good
(agh I hate saying it) PR!

Do you have examples of things currently not fixed?

Some additional updates for affected packages are in updates-testing.
Check there for a package for your broken program, or file a bug about
it if you cannot find one.

The discussion for future prevention is ongoing in several threads, IRC,
and who knows elsewhere.

Shutdown and Reboot from KDE is broken, Kbluetooth4 just hangs these
are examples.

I have a question, why, when it was realised how much of a problem
this update was, it was not just regressed?

Are you aware of a tracker bug tracking all these related issues so that
we can get the whole picture?

I think that's because the developers and maintainers in question did
not, and perhaps still don't, know the entire extent of the problem, and
whether or not it would be quicker to fix the broken apps vs putting the
old dbus back in place.

check the output of
find /etc/dbus-1/ -name '*.conf' | xargs rpm -qf | sort | uniq

they should all be double checked

this one https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=476043
is in updates-testing

No exactly, there are a number of bugs on bugzilla that concentrate on
individual packages but I haven't found a single bug specifically on
this issue, I have found these:

475074
475160
475200

BTW any comments found in these, attributed to me, are merely born of
frustration.

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=475444 "Can't shutdown or
restart any more; only "logout" is available" (KDE with GDM)
I wrote the KDE side of the offending code, I looked at it and the
ConsoleKit D-Bus policy, but I have no idea why D-Bus is now blocking my
messages (the policy looks OK). I asked for help from the ConsoleKit
maintainer (William Jon McCann) and from the maintainer who did the D-Bus
security fix (Colin Walters), neither replied yet.

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=475468 "knetworkmanager:
incorrect default DBUS configuration"
KNetworkManager is not the default in F10 (NetworkManager-gnome is the
default even in the KDE spin), but still everyone who switched to it now
has no working networking anymore (unless they revert and/or block the
D-Bus update).

And I know there's more of those, just search in Bugzilla.

The D-Bus policy really ought to be reverted and never touched again in F8,
F9 and F10. This should only be changed in F11 or even F12. The change is
just not ready for production use at all.

I've been working through things this week and had hoped a lot would
get fixed, but at this point it has turned into an enormous ball of
yarn. So thinking about it I suppose you're right.

I'll do an upload which reverts by tomorrow.

Can I suggest that some sort of an announcement is made, there are a
lot of people out there probably having problems and it might save a
lot of people a lot of time.
