Pulseaudio : lots of issues, how can I help?
I have a lot of seemingly pulse audio related issues on my F9 desktop.
Since I really like the idea behind Pulseaudio, I would like to see
these get sorted out, and would like to know how I can help in terms
of providing useful information.
Here is my situation
* Sounblaster Live 5.1 PCI -- has full 6 channel audio before, I had
for a short while after enabling it as per the pulseaudio wiki, but no
more
* Tvtime -- no audio (doing `padsp sox -r 48000 -w -c 2 -t ossdsp
/dev/dsp -t ossdsp /dev/dsp` works, but causes noticeable lag)
* Amarok (xine) -- audio, susceptible to crashes, esp when I scroll to
fast in Firefox
* Kopete -- used to work, mysteriously stopped working
* Konversation -- never worked
* Mythfront -- no sound yet (haven't followed
http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/3598#comment:16 yet)
* V4L tv capture card -- no sound now, used to rely on capturing AUX
on sound card before
* PulseAudio -- seems to average 30% CPU usage when playing music,
doesn't like me using Firefox too much (seems like a resource issue)
Things I use, albeit infrequently, but just work:
* flash-plugin
* Kplayer
What information should I gather, how, and where should I present it?
I'm guessing at this point you have more than enough bug reports, but
maybe not enough data.

If it's one of the SBs with multiple hardware channels, unless you are
likely to want >32 separate apps pumping out sound at once, disable PA
and just access the card through ALSA directly. It's worked ok for me

Check out these two bugs. You might be hitting this where it is
trying to use the built-in card instead of your addon PCI card by
default, perhaps only for some applications:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=441506
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=448477
Run "pavucontrol" to set the default output device and monitor
applications as they play. You can right click an application stream
to change which device it is using to play through on-the-fly.

I'm pretty sure disabling PulseAudio will work since it worked before
PulseAudio. But disabling it defeats the purpose.

Make sure you have libflashsupport installed. I makes flash happier
with pulseaudio.

As I tried to say, flash works, even though it it is a low priority for me.
And I don't want the thread to seem like I am asking for end-user
support on the devel list.

I'll follow up on those reports and attempt to add useful information.
I have since previous OS (FC7) disabled the onboard sound card at the
BIOS level.

If you have multi-channel hardware that mixes itself, then using
PulseAudio sort of defeats the purpose of that hardware ;o)
I'll accept the argument about allowing mixing with different volume
levels from different sources, but in theory that can be done via ALSA
if the hardware allows it.

You're absolutely right... if all you're using PulseAudio for is basic
mixing. But as soon as you need/want something like per-app volume
control, network transport, audio stream redirection, or audio device
hotplugging then you want PulseAudio.

How many **ordinary** Fedora users really need these **advanced**
features?
For example I have never had any serious SW problem with sound on
Linux. And I use it for more than 10 years...
