Default It is time for another episode of: NAME THAT FEDORA RELEASE

Oh, Beefy Miracle, I have relished your name for months, but as your day
for widespread consumption (release day) approaches, it is time for the
community to choose the name of Fedora 18. This process begins with
*you,* dear readers and contributors, as potential names are accepted
for submission over the course of the next week, beginning now, March
20th, and ending March 27th (at 23:59:59 UTC, for those of you who can't
mustard up any ideas until the last possible second).

Frankly, I'm expecting an a-bun-dance of suggestions, and not just from
people who cannot take my punni-ness any longer. Rules and guidelines
for suggestions, as well as the location in which you may make your name
suggestions, are on this wiki page:

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Name_suggestions_for_Fedora_18

A quick word on details:

You *must* follow the guidelines at the page listed above for your name
to be considered. These guidelines include the following items:

* There must be an "is-a" link between the name "Beefy Miracle" (the
name of F17) and your suggested name.

* That link must be different from any previous links between release names.
* Names of living people and well-known trademarks will likely be
rejected as well.

Schedule details for release naming are also shown on the F18 naming
wiki page.

I know that it may be hard to *top* Beefy Miracle (ahahahaha, get it? As
in toppings!) but I do have every bit of faith that many of you have
already thought of name suggestions that may or may not be more mature,
or more neutral with regards to dietary restrictions. I do look
forward to seeing your suggested names and recommend, as always, to have
fun.

Cheers,

-Robyn

I noted that a lot of name suggestions were failing the "Is a" test
this morning. I've added comments to the naming table on the wiki to
names which don't have that link. If you have suggested a name,
please look for a note there. If the Board is unable to determine the
"is a" link, the name won't proceed to legal (and from there to voting
as a potential Fedora 18 code name).

Also, please make the "is-a" linkage as narrow as you can. For
instance, I put down a lot of suggested links like "Beefy Miracle is a
food and Potato Chips are also a food" If you can narrow down the
food category like: "Beefy Miracle is a food served at summer
barbeques and so are Potato Chips" that is better. Why? Because it
will leave open more ways to form "is-a" links for future Fedora Code
names.

Thank you
-Toshio

That sounds good.. the naming reasons for Beefy Miracle in 17 were
extremely "lax" in that regard. I would honestly like to ask the
following:

1) Stop the naming cycle.
2) Reset the naming cycle and rules.

I ask this because it is really hard to top Zod or Beefy Miracle.. (or
really want to after finally getting them), and also I am not sure
what "naming" does for us anymore. It is way too early in a release
cycle to "produce excitement". [And if we can change out init systems,
filesystem layout, we can surely examine whether naming does much or
if there is something new we want to try.]

On resetting the naming cycle and rules.. while we could maintain a
"is a/ also a" rule, would it help trademark approval if we went to a
2 or 3 word name cycle. Many of the one word names have problems
because they will be used somewhere else. Adding a "adverb verb" or
"adjective noun" or a "adverb adjective noun" would make it easier to
delineate and move names through.
