start-here icon DRAFT
Hi,
I've prepared another Places icons, this time it's start-here. It's
supposed to be the upstream echo icon for the main menu, which is
usually replaced in distributions by their own logos. Therefore I used
the Echo Icon Theme trac banner as base. I attach 16x16, 22x22 and 48x48
versions.

I like the icon! but not for the place you made it.. i would never
want to see that icon as my start icon..
So it's good but try to find another purpose for it. Something with
sound would work well i think.

You have a point there, I can imagine it being used for IM applications
like empathy, gajim or pidgin, now that you mention it... My point
behind the decision for start-here was because the icon I used is main
part of the new echo-icon-theme logo and start-here is IMHO a good place
to show the logo (and it will most likely be replaced by fedora logo
when echo is made default fedora theme).
BTW, I myself wondered how it would look like in such place, but when I
put it there, it didn't look that bad. It's a matter of time before you
get used to it, like to fedora logo, opensuse chameleon (or what animal
is that), ubuntu logo, gnome foot, oxygen "o" (which looks to me more
like a logo for some music software), ...
Do you have any better suggestions for start-here icon? Perhaps some
stylised letter "e" (which has a drawback of being similar to MSIE
logo)?
Thanks,
Martin

Maybe remove one wave will work.

Not everything is a mather of "getting used to it" if it's the logo of
a distribution it's different.
This icon is just an icon not a logo or something and besides that it
takes up about double the space of a logo because you need a bigger
icon as start-here to still be readable.
This good icon just doesn't need to be on the start-here location.

I decided to remove the waves altogether. Makes the icon less cluttered
and would probably work better in the place it is designed for.

Me wonders how long has it been since I last played pacman :-D Now we
can only hope the icon won't start moving and eat the menu :-p

Does anyone know what the policy on re-using (or remixing perhaps is a better term) the official Fedora wallpaper is?
Here is the context:
I am doing some wallpaper for a podcast (hackerpublicradio.org) that will be distributing a promotional CD of previous episodes, along with some bonus material like wallpaper art, at the upcoming HOPE conference.* I'd been using a blue gradient in the background of my design and then as I sat staring at my own desktop of choice (Fedora 9, naturally) I realized that the WAVES image could be a nice subtle hint at which Linux distro is....well, the coolest.
The design in question would look like this were i to incorporate Waves:

I could probably have the guy making the CDs include a README file to give credit where credit is due, too.

IIRC, all of the artwork is GPL or dual licensed under GPL/ Creative
Commons attribution share alike license. At any rate, remixing is
explicitly allowed for any Fedora artwork as long as you give credit. So
reusing the artwork while putting a note somewhere on the original
source should do.
