doing "sudo apt-get install libsdl1.2debian-all" (which did remove libsdl1.2debian-alsa) allowed Tuxpaint, and Childsplay and others to correctly close on exiting the programs.
However, now it appears that sound in flash doesn't work. Any chance there's a way to have it work in both?
Unfortunately flash is probably more important, but I'd hate to have to remove cool educational apps that hang on exit.

I think you also need to install the libflashsupport package.
