Default LTSP Autologin

While configuring autologin through

/var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/lts.conf

I noticed that autologin only works if you have the default stanza
populated with some key value pair, e.g.

[default]
VOLUME=70

[Mac address of client]
LDM_AUTOLOGIN=true
LDM_PASSWORD=XXXXXXXXX
LDM_USERNAME=station1

Take out the VOLUME line and it doesn't work.
Is this by design?
