adjust brightness/contrast via /sys

I want to do
$ echo what_please? > /sys?/where? or /proc/acpi/where?
to adjust brightness and/or contrast, for the Linux console and/or in
X windows. My monitor is Sampo Tech Rad-5Q. I use the latest Debian sid.
