Default ssh quirk after upgrade?

I did a dist-upgrade, kernel is 2.6.25-3
OpenSSH_4.76p1 Debian-9

The ssh server is ignoring the rsa-pub keys in
~/.ssh/authorized_keys (pam authentication is
working though).

Any pointers,

See http://www.debian.org/security/2008/dsa-1571 and also
http://www.debian.org/security/key-rollover/ . Probably the key is a
weak one and is being rejected by the latest version.
