Are you using GNU emacs? Then how about Xemacs (formely Lucid emacs)?

or vice-versa.

Actually, i guess somebody should bring up SXemacs.

This variant has lots of goodies in it (e.g., quaternion support and lots of
other stuff you wouldn't expect in an editor) and discards all legacy not
needed for unix, iirc.
