Default PS2 Keyboard not working after latest update

Hi,
I'm sorry but I'm having a bit of a problem with Debian squeeze.

The keyboard hardware is working as I can use it in grub but as soon as
I get to GDM the keyboard does not respond. Even if I kill GDM via ssh,
the keyboard doesn't respond on the terminal.

I'm all up to date on upgrades and my xorg.conf is minimal;
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
DefaultDepth 16
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1280x1024"
EndSubSection
EndSection

Here's my Xorg.0.log if that helps, there something about a power button
but I don't know what to do about it.

It seems not to be related to X then.

I'm not running squeeze, so I'm not sure which packages have changed.

but, as a suggestion,

does either "less /var/log/dpkg.log | grep keyboard" and/or "less
/var/log/syslog | grep keyboard" show anything of interest.

Another thing to remember is that any updates to squeeze are carefully
tested and if a bug crept through like that there would be soon be an
uproar.

Check dmesg output for *any* messages regarding your keyboard.

Hi,
Tried both of those but nothing. I have a theory that it might be a Udev problem, but can't be certain. Does anyone have any ideas why a problem like that might arise?

Do you have any data to backup your theory?

Default PS2 Keyboard not working after latest update

Hi,
I'm really sorry to bother you all about this, but I'm really no closer
to solving this problem and am having a lot of difficulties with it. Any
advice or pointers on how to solve this would be greatly appreciated as
at the moment I just can't use the computer.

Thanks,
James

Hi,
I'm sorry but I'm having a bit of a problem with Debian squeeze.

The keyboard hardware is working as I can use it in grub but as soon as
I get to GDM the keyboard does not respond. Even if I kill GDM via ssh,
the keyboard doesn't respond on the terminal.

I'm all up to date on upgrades and my xorg.conf is minimal;
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
DefaultDepth 16
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1280x1024"
EndSubSection
EndSection

Here's my Xorg.0.log if that helps, there something about a power button
but I don't know what to do about it.

I don't know if this will be of any help but Google suggests adding:

Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AutoAddDevices" "True"
EndSection

In xorg.conf (if you are using it).

It seems the Xorg driver is detecting the keyboard properly :-?

I once had problem similar to this where I had inadvertently turned on
(while playing bzflag) some keyboard feature that I didn't want or need
(accessbility?). I forget exactly what it was, but I could no longer
log in with GDM. I could kill gdm, however, (at the console, after
logging in at the console), startx, and get into gnome, and that's how I
fixed what I had inadvertently broken (in gnome).

This doesn't sound exactly like your problem, though, because when you kill gdm,
your keyboard doesn't work at the console anymore, if I'm understanding
correctly?

Is it a US keyboard?

Can you boot a live CD and change gb to us?

i.e
root@tal:~# less /etc/default/keyboard
# Check /usr/share/doc/keyboard-configuration/README.Debian for
# documentation on what to do after having modified this file.

# The following variables describe your keyboard and can have the same
# values as the XkbModel, XkbLayout, XkbVariant and XkbOptions options
# in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

XKBMODEL="pc105"
XKBLAYOUT="us"
XKBVARIANT=""
XKBOPTIONS=""

<cut>

Remember to read /usr/share/doc/keyboard-configuration/README.Debian

This is on a wheezy system, not sure about a squeeze set up.

Default PS2 Keyboard not working after latest update

I have never encountered this problem before. All updates I did to squeeze never bothered my keyboard. Then again I am using a usb-keyboard. Not PS/2 connection type. I've noticed in the past using PS/2 keyboard they did not always work. I will have to do a little investigation on this matter. However your issue helps me look deeper into how my system detects and adds the keyboard.*
