Default Having Mozilla Firefox as default web browser

Hi
Following extensive upgrading of 1386 wheezy, I am unable to get
easily Mozilla Firefox as web browser. I have to commad with full path
to its installation.

Iceweasel is unable to treat Google Mail adequately. More importantly,
Iceaweasel is unable to talk in/back with my connections to certain
scientific software. How to eliminate all web browser to leave
Mozilla Firefox?

thanks

What's your desktop?

Have you checked with "update-alternatives --list x-www-browser"?

This is something that can be reported, should the error is consistent
and fully reproducible.

This can be also reported. Iceweasel and Firefox code are almost
identical.

I had to remove Icewasel to install Firefox. This can be done from
Synaptic or the usual package managers (apt, aptitude).

AFAIK this is already known, and the problem is not the small difference
between Iceweasel and Firefox, but rather that Google (and several other
sites) have dropped support for Firefox 3.5 which is the base for
Iceweasel in Squeeze.

It is also possible to obtain newer Iceweasel versions from
http://mozilla.debian.net/.

I have the impression, which may indeed be erroneous, that Google has
deliberately obsoleted Iceweasel in order to push its users into Chrome or
chromium. Though I imagine that it will still play ball with IE.

This happened when they "updated"/"improved" Gmail.

I also have that impression.
Forunately, it still works just fine with imap via mutt and also
in elinks and in Opera as well, for those occasions one must access
gmails settings dialog. Best of all, elinks and Opera don't
require updating every four minutes to avoid being pwned.
An important factor for those of us with extremely limited bandwidth....

Most organisations are stopping support for older versions of browsers.
FF/IW v3.5 is now ancient; FF is up to v12 on the Mozilla web site and
in Debian experimental. Still at v10 in Sid. Anyhow, to be fair to
google, FF v4 is still supported.

It's impossible to support all features people seem to want in early
versions of FF.

Even IE can't handle some of the stuff gmail can do. Google say that
"In general, Gmail supports the current and prior major release of
Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari on a rolling basis."

Look at http://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=6557 for a full description of what's supported.

But (if read it correctly) the OP is running wheezy and thus an updated
version of Iceweasel :-?

Anyway, with the new Firefox super-fast-and-non-sense update policy I
find very convenient to keep the upstream version.

Oh, indeed.
