Default PS/2 Keyboard and Mice not working (USB is) on X

Hi.

The problem, in short -

I run Experimental (sources.list has two blocks, one each for
debian-multimedia, and debian.org, with three lines each for
experimental, sid and testing).

After a upgrade last Sunday, my keyboard and mouse were not working on
X, but were working on console. I tried everything, including going back
(only X related stuff) to stable, but no avail.

Few minutes back, I gave up, and before starting on a clean reinstall,
plugged in the spare USB mouse and USB keyboard, and things are working
back again. (in both X and console).

Nvidia chipset, GeForce 7025/nForce 630a graphics on board chipset,
MCP61 PCI chipset on Asus M2N68 AM plus Mobo. More hardware details at
bottom.

Previous upgrade was 5 days earlier, and things were working fine for
the intervening 5 days. After a reboot, I find that keyboard and mouse
were not working in X _only_. I was using the rescue mode to try and
decipher what was going on.

I downgraded every package listed above (except ssl, libc6, libreoffice,
python, etc, which obviously are not related to this issue). Since
downgrading the individual packages did not help, I wiped the entire
xorg section from aptitude went back to stable, and reinstalled whole of
Xorg. Since that did not work, I repeated the whole exercise after
wiping, purging, removing orphans etc and reinstalling. I even tried
downgrading the kernel.

FInally, I fish out the USB devices, and things start working again.

I have been using the console throughout (irrespective of runlevel), if
X did not start (like with xserver-xorg uninstalled and all remaining X
related packages left installed). Since problem is only with X being
unable to read input from PS2 mice and keyboard, hardware issues can be
rules out.

Since I run experimental on my desktop. This is updated 4/5 times a
months, and as expected, things do break frequently. Usually, I am able
to fix'em up in an hour or so. But, this time around, I am floored.

I frequently switched between the nouveau and the non-free nvidia
drivers (from debian-multimedia, installed using module-assistant). I
prefer the nouveau because it is free, and there is no marked difference
to my undiscreening eyes, and nouveau is what I am running right now. I
did try the non-free drivers too in between, but that too did not solve
the problem.

The question is, what is causing the probkem? Software? If so, which
package? Or is my MoBo giving up?

Is it posslble that there is some cruft lying around in /etc/ which is
causing the problem? (/etc/X* was cleaned out).

No, Debian dropped working PS/2 equipment for versions ex stable a long
time ago. In my case only the mouse doesn't work anymore, the keyboard
still does work.

I've got an outdated Suse, some outdated Ubuntu, AVLinux aka Debian
stable, current Ubuntu and current Arch installed.

If there would be another OS, I would drop Linux, since things become
more and more idiotic. Nobody cares about bugs, for serious computer
usage.

For the future expect much more serious issues, but that PS/2 issue.
