I'm not sure if mouse work I usually in graphics mode when lenny doesn't respond to my key strokes I press alt+F1 (to switch to tty) but lenny remains in graphics mode even pressing power button on PC case can't shutdown lenny I have to unplug power cable to shutdown I suspect the hard disk is failing so I test with badblocks but it takes too much time. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-REQUEST@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". If you can connect and manage the server from a remote machine that may indicate an isolated problem not a system wide one: 1/ If you are running X server, that can mean xorg is freezed and so the keyboard refuses to respond. 2/ If no X server running, that could mean you have a problem with the keyboard or the port it is attached to (PS/2 or USB), try with another one. 3/ In addition, you can check the logs when the system freezes to gather furher information of the hang, run "top" to scan for any application consuming several resources, etc... sometime I can't shutdown lenny after using it for some time (I mean lenny doesn't respond to my key strokes) has anyone have similar experience? I install and run some no open source software as a no-root user it shouldn't cause problem I've had the same problem at times. It is usually caused by a bad install of a program or an update that got hosed. What cures it for me is to purge the program I am working on at the time and reinstall it. That is when I'm running stable. I'm now running Wheezy/testing and it happens a little more often so I just wait for updates to fix it. Now at times, it's not the program I'm currently using but one that is also open at the same time and the two programs are fighting each other for I/O. You might have to figure out what other program might be interfering with your current program. Not here. Lenny is very solid and reliable. Perhaps you are having a hardware problem? But as the saying goes, no man is an island. I really thought Woody was an excellent release too. And Sarge was quite good too. But I miss 'xmms' and 'grip' now unsupported. But eventually we all need to move forward. And there is always the Heirloom Project for those who do not. :-) > > Not here. There are security upgrades planned to be available for another twelve months. I have that long to work out how to make the upgrade for them. Bob |
