KDE does not log out or shut down.
Good time of the day.
I can not log out nor shut down from KDE in wheezy. - I have tried a newly created user too w/o luck. Should I file a bug report against it? OR I miss a package? Also, I have errors w/ Akonadi on server self test at startup running under "old" user (for newly created it is OK): - control process not registered at D-bus - server not registered at D-bus - nepomuk search service not registered at D-Bus - No resource agents found. IS it possible to fix it, or I have to wipe the KDE configuration and start a new? I guess the above messages are pretty common in today's KDE desktop, I mean, nothing serious to worry about although it needs to be corrected, of course. Is kde supposed to make some kind of sound when you get to the login
prompt? If not default behavior could it be arranged for that to happen? Yes - unless you change the default theme System Settings => Notifications => System Notifications => Applications => Sytem Notification Configuration:- Event Source = KDE System Notifications Login = Play Sound Default sound is KDE-Sys-Log-In-Short.ogg You can modify the default sound or change it to an action (including speech). NOTE: check:- System Settings => Notifications => System Bell => unselect "Use System Bell instead of System Notification" (the bell uses motherboard speaker which may not work). And also check:- System Settings => Notifications => System Notifications => Player Settings => ensure you have selected "Use the KDE Sound System". Check the existence of the default sound (for login):- $ ls /usr/share/sounds/ | grep KDE-Sys-Log-In-Short.ogg Check notify settings:- $ cat ~/.kde/share/config/knotifyrc If it still doesn't work, but your sound system does, check:- ~/.xsessions-errors for clues (look for a line calling the start up sound eg. KDE-Sys-Log-In-Short.ogg) > If not default behavior could it be arranged for that to happen? Yes - you can change the System Settings as above. Alternatively you can install beep and call it at login by a number of methods. <snipped> Cheers -- "People in the United Kingdom and outside the United States share my bemusement with the United States that America doesn’t share with itself. Just nothing happens - the dialog window vanishes away and that's it - I can still use the session. It is the same for both. No any on-screen messages for both options. Here is the content of error file since a new user has started the very first KDE session: http://pastebin.com/WshrSsAx >> Also, I have errors w/ Akonadi on server self test at startup running >> under "old" user (for newly created it is OK): >> >> - control process not registered at D-bus >> >> - server not registered at D-bus >> >> - nepomuk search service not registered at D-Bus >> >> - No resource agents found. >> >> IS it possible to fix it, or I have to wipe the KDE configuration and >> start a new? > >I guess the above messages are pretty common in today's KDE desktop, I >mean, nothing serious to worry about although it needs to be >corrected, of course. Okay, you can run these two tests: 1/ Try to shutdown as usual by running "shutdown -h now" from konsole 2/ And then you can try to logout by running "killall kdeinit" or simply "kdekillall" (recheck these commands, maybe your version of KDE also allows another method to get the job done by means of "dcop something-to- logout") :-) Note: killing kde init processes will effectively destroy your kde session, just ensure you don't have any open document nor program pending to be saved before you run it. >>> Should I file a bug report against it? Thanks for the log... True is that I can't see a line related to the shutdown/logout error but it's plenty of the other Akonadi/Nepomuk warnings you also told us. For the "new" user there is no "kdekillall", whereas "killall kdeinit" says there is no such a process. What I do for now is killing all the user process that includes all the KDE-related stuff. >> Just nothing happens - the dialog window vanishes away and that's it >> - I can still use the session. Yes, it works. Good. That means KDE is somehow preventing itself to be properly shutdown. Okay, then try with the "old" method: go to a tty (ctrl+alt+f1), log in as root and fall into "init 1", that will close your current X session. Then "su -" as your user, and run "startx". Once in, try to logout as usual, from the K menu. >>> Just nothing happens - the dialog window vanishes away and that's it - >>> I can still use the session. It is the same for both. No any on-screen >>> messages for both options. >> >>Weird :-? > > It is the risen why we are discussing it here. :) Sure X-) I meant, it looks like KDE doesn't "notice" the signal to run the commands when you press the corresponding buttons from the menu as I would have expected a warning or error to be printed on the screen advising the user that something went wrong. >>> Here is the content of error file since a new user has started the >>> very first KDE session: >>> >>> http://pastebin.com/WshrSsAx >> >>(...) >> >>Thanks for the log... IIRC, this error was not present for the new user, right? That may mean that you have to reset/resit your current kde user profile, but for the kde desktop I dunno what folder to rename, hum... maybe some KDE user of the list can give you some hints on this :-? Thank You for Your time and answer, Camaleón:

I can not start kde - for startkde fails to start - stating that $DISPLAY variable is not set or impossible to connect to X server. And startx starts LXDE - that I have no logout problem with. >I meant, it looks like KDE doesn't "notice" the signal to run the >commands when you press the corresponding buttons from the menu as I >would have expected a warning or error to be printed on the screen >advising the user that something went wrong. It must me something related to dbus or whatever processing system employs KDE to communicate applications with the low level stack, I mean, whatever is preventing the shutdown inside the desktop is not an application or a process that you could "kill". Gee.. desktops are becoming more and more complex by every hour :-) >>Okay, then try with the "old" method: go to a tty (ctrl+alt+f1), log in >>as root and fall into "init 1", that will close your current X session. >>Then "su -" as your user, and run "startx". Hum... maybe you can try with one of these options: How to select multiple desktop environment using startx? http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=59562 (it's just to test, you can even manually edit the ".xinitrc" file and point it to KDE instaead of LXDE and change it afterwards) >>I meant, it looks like KDE doesn't "notice" the signal to run the >>commands when you press the corresponding buttons from the menu as I >>would have expected a warning or error to be printed on the screen >>advising the user that something went wrong. > > Yea. Okay, but I meant if -despite the log- that Akonadi error was also present on a fresh new created user. IIRC, you said the error was not reproducible on a new user :-? >>That may mean that you have to reset/resit your current kde user >>profile, but for the kde desktop I dunno what folder to rename, hum... >>maybe some KDE user of the list can give you some hints on this :-? > > Good idea I will ask there.
