Default X and no Keyboard (debian Squeeze)

Hello everyone1
First: I'm new here, but a longterm Linux user. No experience however with
any GUI, I'm blind.
So I installed X and Gnome to test Orca - screenreader again. When I start X
no more keyboard action. The system continues running flawlessly, had a music
player running. Had a look at the Xorg.0.log and saw a few problems, mainly to
do with graphics. I tested it both with my selfmade kernel and the
2.6.32-something Debian supplied one. What would you need to work this out
with me?

My normal setup:
Debian Squeeze
Kernel: 2.6.38 (SMP, preempt)
Keyboard; Standard PS/2
Mouse: None
Thanks for any help and hints.
Kindest regards
Julien

Does stopping Orca ("Insert+q") make any improvement?

Does the keyboard works when you are in a tty ("Ctrl+Alt+F1")?

Maybe you can upload or attach to the list the whole "/var/log/
Xorg.0.log" file so we can review it.

Default X and no Keyboard (debian Squeeze)

Hi Camaleon!
When I say, tha I have no keyboard, I meant no keyboard for the whole
system. I have to press the power button. Orca doesn't start. The first time
you have to put something in a config-file or just start Orca with alt+F2 for
exec command and then use Orca's menus or whatever to make it start everytime
you log in. So it shouldn't be Orca.
My Xorg.0.log is attached. If that doesn't get through, please shout and
I'll either put it in a mail or upload on my webserver.

Warmly yours and thanks
Julien

You mean the system is not responding or just that keyboard is missing
and you have to power it off?

Okay, let's forget about Orca then.

Thanks for the log.

By reading it I can see many errors coming from the VGA -as you pointed
in your first message- but what surprises me is not seeing a line about
the input drivers (keyboard and mouse) :-?

Can you put here the result of this command?

dpkg -l | grep xserver-xorg-input

Default X and no Keyboard (debian Squeeze)

Hello Camaleon!
I mean, the moment X starts, the keyboard doesn't respond at all. the
keyboard as such is nicely connected and everything.

Here's the output from the filtered package list:
# dpkg -l | grep xserver-xorg-input
ii xserver-xorg-input-evdev 1:2.3.2-6 X.Org X server -- evdev input driver
ii xserver-xorg-input-kbd 1:1.4.0-2 X.Org X server -- keyboard input driver

Doesn't look like much, but keyboard is there. Should there be a mouse input
driver to make it work?
Another thing, at one point there was something in the Xorg.0.log about
reconfiguring udev to not automatically create some things. Could that be
something valuable?

***
(II) The server relies on udev to provide the list of input devices. If no
devices become available, reconfigure udev or disable AutoAddDevices.

***
Thank you!
Warm regards
Julien

That should be fine, I guess.

Ah, good catch. Although I also get that message this can be worth a try
:-)

But how to disable "AutoDevices"? I think that's a Xorg setting, let me
google for that...

Hum, found this tip¹, while it's for wheezy it can be also valid for
squeeze): it seems you have to put this stanza in your "/etc/X11/
xorg.conf" file (create that file if it is not there).

Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AutoAddDevices" "False"
EndSection

But I'm afraid you will a keyboard to do that O:-). Can you grab a USB
keyboard and attach it to the computer? Another option can be accessing
to the machine via ssh and run the commands from a remote computer.

nice to read you here too.

As long as you aren't using a /etc/X11/xorg.conf, I suspect that
packages are useless (I'm not sure about that . Usually Debian doesn't
use an xorg.conf to set up X. Please try running Debian with an
xorg.conf.

Wow, my Debian xorg.conf is useless as an example for you, since it
doesn't have entries for keyboard and mouse.

I found something for my Suse install, you might try this for xorg.conf

Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Layout[all]"
Screen "Screen[0]" 0 0
InputDevice "Keyboard[0]" "CoreKeyboard"
InputDevice "Mouse[1]" "CorePointer"
Option "Clone" "off"
Option "Xinerama" "off"
EndSection

Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AllowMouseOpenFail" "on"
Option "ZapWarning" "on"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Keyboard[0]"
Driver "kbd"
Option "Protocol" "Standard"
Option "XkbLayout" "de"
Option "XkbModel" "microsoftpro"
Option "XkbRules" "xfree86"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"

Identifier "Mouse[1]"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Buttons" "5"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "Name" "ImPS/2 Generic Wheel Mouse"
Option "Protocol" "explorerps/2"
Option "Vendor" "Sysp"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

I'm not sure, since you're using braille, if you need an entry for vesa
and monitor settings to start X with an xorg.conf.

Perhaps you need to add

Section "Device"
Driver "vesa"
EndSection

Hth,

Ralle

OT PS: Some might wait for replies off-list, I'll write you ASAP, I'm
short in time at the moment, pardon , especially to S..

Default X and no Keyboard (debian Squeeze)

Hello Camaleon!
I've got it fixed, finally! :-) I googled some more on the side and found a
guide from gentoo. I ended up just copying another stanza from an example
xorg.conf and now it works!

Thanks for al the help, it was very valuable to me.
Kind regards
Julien

Could it be possible that you send to the list what was the stanza you
added to get the keyboard working? That will be of much help for other
users experiencing your problem.

Greetings,
