Default Disabling GNOME loud beep at shutting down

Hello,

Since some days I'm hearing a very (I mean "very") loud beep when I
shutdown (or was it when restarting?) GNOME in Wheezy.

Is it possible to disable it? It's so loud that even hurts.

Greetings,

Is it coming through your speakers or from the motherboard? Also, try this
in your terminal: "setterm -blength 0"

It turns off beeps from the terminal.

It does not work ;-(

In fact, I get no beeps from the terminal just when shutting down/
restarting.

This is something new but I dunno where comes from. I've been using
wheezy since weeks and was not present. One of the latest updates could
have enabled it but dunno what I need to tweak.

Did you test if there will be no beep after removing the driver for this
PC beep thingy? Removing it might disable the terminal bell and some
notification beeps. I guess here it isn't loaded by default, but IIRC
the BIOS anyway gives information by beeps.

modprobe -r pcspkr

I don't like desktop sample sounds, but sometimes a beep by this beep
thingy can be useful. If I should enable beeps and it should be to loud
and there shouldn't be a way to make it silent by software, I would use
some heat resistant fabric to cover this beep thingy.

I dunno laptops, but for PCs this beep thingy can be disconnected
easily. OT: I had to ´tweak´ the connectors for the PC tower's LEDs when
I switched the mobo.

Keep system bell, but disable GDM bell?

Here's a howto for login:

http://error.wordpress.com/2005/11/03/gdm-please-dont-beep-at-login/

This or something similar might work for restart or shutdown too? Does
it beep at the start or at the end of the shutdown/restart?

On my machine there's an empty PostSession script:

# cat /etc/gdm3/PostSession/Default
#!/bin/sh

exit 0

I don't think that the greeter has to do with the shutdown beep, but I
anyway would test it:

# cat /etc/gdm3/greeter.gconf-defaults
# Use a specific background
#/desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename /usr/share/images/desktop-base/login-background.svg
#/desktop/gnome/background/picture_options zoom

# Theming options
#/desktop/gnome/interface/gtk_theme Clearlooks

# Greeter options
/apps/gdm/simple-greeter/logo_icon_name debian-swirl

# Play system beeps - especially the one when the greeter is ready
/desktop/gnome/sound/event_sounds true

# Some other possible options
#/apps/gdm/simple-greeter/banner_message_enable true
#/apps/gdm/simple-greeter/banner_message_text Welcome
#/apps/gdm/simple-greeter/disable_restart_buttons false
#/apps/gdm/simple-greeter/disable_user_list false

# The lower panel doesn't work with the compositor
/apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager false

# Prevent the power management icon from showing up
/apps/gnome-power-manager/ui/icon_policy never
