i'm feeling a bit stupid here, but:

swilson@swilson-mbp-vdebian:/home$ sudo kill -HUP 1
swilson@swilson-mbp-vdebian:/home$ whoami; cat /etc/group | grep
staff; ls -ld /home/test; echo "" > /home/test/blah
swilson
staff:x:50:swilson
drwxrwxr-x 2 root staff 4096 Jun 14 12:02 /home/test
bash: /home/test/blah: Permission denied

reposting to list, sent to user by accident

hah, forgot about that part....

oh, so here's the thing; i've got half a dozen screen windows going
and i don't really feel like logging out. newgrp wants a password and
it doesn't like user swilson's password. and re-spawning a shell
without exporting anything doesn't change what groups i'm associated
with:

swilson@swilson-mbp-vdebian:~$ sh
sh-4.1$ groups
swilson dialout cdrom floppy audio video plugdev
sh-4.1$ exit

any suggestions, or what am i doing wrong with newgrp?

Reloading init with telinit q (or SIGHUP as you've done) just causes it to
re-read inittab. In case you added a new entry there.
