Default floppy drive in debian stable

Greetings,

I'm not subscribed to debian-user anymore, so would appreciate a CC on the response if someone has an idea about how to
solve the below.

I have a friend who has used debian GNU/linux (with the help of others) for many years. After his most recent upgrade
to stable, everything is working on his machine except his floppy drive. He has data on floppies (written from an old
DOS machine) that he wants to print. As I said, he's done this in the past (prior to this latest upgrade) without
trouble. He's now tried multiple different floppy disks. Below is some information directly from him. Anyone got any
ideas on what he needs to do in order to get /dev/fd0 to live again?

thanks so very much in advance,
~c

<pasted message w/info follows>

Here's what happens now:

I type mtfl and get:

mount: special device /dev/fd0 does not exist

Here's the contents of mtfl

#!/bin/bash

sudo mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /media/floppy0
