About to order motherboard Asus M4A78LT-M - any known issues?
Howdie, fellow Debianites!
I'm about to order a system with Asus M4A78LT-M (AM3/PCIE/S/R/V1G/H5200, with an AMD Phenom II X4 840, 3,20GHz) and was wondering whether any list member has any experience with this mobo in Debian Squeeze. In particular: 1. I'm planning to run virtualized Windows XP on it and have seen reports such as http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/5639 about VirtualBox having problems with AMD SVM. Anybody care to confirm/rebut that? Does hardware virtualization work? 2. What's the support for the integrated ATI Radeon 3000 graphics in the stock Squeeze kernel? Can the free driver be used? Is 3D working? Will be immensely grateful for any first-hand experience. This is important to me -- *cash* is involved ;P TIA -- Cheerio, Klistvud http://bufferoverflow.tiddlyspot.com Certifiable Loonix User #481801 Please reply to the list, not to me. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-REQUEST@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Yes, but as the saying goes, "some vendors disable hardware virtualization in the BIOS." So we're back to square one... ;D > > 2. What's the support for the integrated ATI Radeon 3000 graphics in the > stock Squeeze kernel? Can the free driver be used? I didn't express myself clearly enough. I won't be doing 3D in the virtual. I will be running 3D in plain (bare-metal) Squeeze, for some OpenGL games and stuff. But I will also run a virtual Windows XP machine in my plain Squeeze from time to time (probably qemu/kvm since it's built into the kernel and I know it best). So the question is, how does ATI 3000 3D wotk in Squeeze pure and simple. so, check the processor to make sure you've got one that supports hw virtualization and that's about it. everything should 'just work' out of the box except 3d which you'll probably need to install the ati driver for (probably even get that out of the non-free repo now days). Looks useful. OTOH, it lists my board like this; http://kmuto.jp/debian/hcl/ASUS/M3N78+PRO A bit lacking in info, as I know that board works. So, it's not exactly up to date with the info it has. I'm using Testing, and have been ever since I came to Debian some five years ago. -- Regards _ / ) "The blindingly obvious is / _)rad never immediately apparent" Bet you thought you knew what I was about Problem - Sex Pistols |

Thanx for your input. It's not *that* new, but then again, neither is the Squeeze kernel ... ;P For example, when I bought my current machine, the on board network adaptor was not recognised, nor was the graphics card's chip set. Oh well, I'll do without the integrated network card for a while if that should be the case. It's the video subsystem and the proprietary drivers that really worry me... ;D --- Cheerio, Klistvud http://bufferoverflow.tiddlyspot.com Certifiable Loonix User #481801 Please reply to the list, not to me. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-REQUEST@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe".
