When I got my mobo, even the VESA driver would only run the GFX chipset
at something like 800 x 600. It does much better these days, correctly
identifying the screen resolution as 1680 x 1050. X.org is constantly
improving.

IDK much about the ATI drivers, other than they're closed source. I
think that they cause fewer problems than the nVidia ones, though. At
least, I don't recall seeing as many people asking for help installing
them and getting them working as people do for the nVidia stuff. Mind
you, that could just be because I use nVidia and notice the calls for
help with them more.

You can add/expand the information.

Just follow the instructions: go here¹, run "lspci -n", check if your
devices are already in the db and add any comment for your motherboard
model using the form at the bottom (for instance, "it works out-of-the-
box with "lenny|squeeze|testing..." or "embedded video card not detected,
needs a recent kernel").

Yep, the network card(s) issue does seem to pop up from time to time,
even on this very list. Oh well, I'll do without the integrated network
card for a while if that should be the case. It's the video subsystem
and the proprietary drivers that really worry me... ;D

If this is actually the board you are referring to, then since it is
*really* old (the AMD 760G Northbridge is older than the 780G in my 18
month old box), you should have no compatibility issues.

Over the years, I've gotten the sense that there are many more
compatibility and stability issues with the (free and proprietary) ATI
drivers than compared to nv and nvidia.

It is. But the page http://kmuto.jp/debian/hcl/ASUS/M4A78LT-M/ referred
to earlier in the thread states that to make the integrated video and
some more arcane features work, a kernel > 2.6.35 is needed...

Video and the NIC worked with Sid 18 months ago on my 780G mobo.

Yup. Note also that when installing the mobo, I almost instantly
replaced it with a discrete Nvidia card running (call me heretic) the
nvidia driver.

Howdie, fellow Debianites!

I'm about to order a system with Asus M4A78LT-M (AM3/PCIE/S/R/V1G/H5200, with an AMD Phenom II X4 840, 3,20GHz) and was wondering whether any list member has any experience with this mobo in Debian Squeeze.

In particular:

1. I'm planning to run virtualized Windows XP on it and have seen reports such as http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/5639 about VirtualBox having problems with AMD SVM. Anybody care to confirm/rebut that? Does hardware virtualization work?

2. What's the support for the integrated ATI Radeon 3000 graphics in the stock Squeeze kernel? Can the free driver be used? Is 3D working?

Will be immensely grateful for any first-hand experience. This is important to me -- *cash* is involved ;P

TIA

As an aside I am leary of motherboards with 2 DIMM slots. If you want to go beyond 4Gb to 8Gb (2 x 4Gb DIMMS) (for virtualization and all that) the RAM is very pricey. I suppose 4Gb DIMMs are not very popular.

I would say bite the bullet and go for a board with 4 DIMM slots, upgrading RAM will be cheaper in the log term.

I couldn't agree more and, in fact, I might just do so -- because the
motherboard *does* have 4 slots! ;D

You may have gotten misleaded by 2 slots being blue and 2 being black
...

Thanx for the input anyway.
