I ran this :
dpkg -l | grep gnome | cut -c4-34

and got 79 packages, none of which look like anything I ever use.. Of course
the dependencies ( gimp?) might be programs that i do use..

thanks, I might try that.
at least I can run it and see what it comes up with, I can always "N" and
cancel.

The "COLUMNS=140" is *very* important.

No, actually, I don't. Long live apt-get!!!

"Purge" connotes /more/ than remove. Deletes /etc config files, I
think.

So.... you use GNOME & she uses KDE. What's the problem?

Maybe [xgk]dm doesn't allow that,

That which ossifies perishes.

If you log in to the ooooh-scary-black console, put this at the
bottom of her .bashrc file:

if [ "$TERM" == "linux" ]; then
startx /usr/bin/startkde
exit
fi

oh, I totally understand, I was just saying I did the dpkg to see what
packages it would remove..
and did a wc -l to see a total of 79 packages..

apt-get remove <package> deletes the program but leaves config files,
apt-get remove --purge <package> deletes everything.

Default Removing GNOME

I've just installed 8.04 on an elderly laptop (PII-450, 256MB RAM). I
only had a vanilla GNOME LiveCD, so I've used that.

I've tried installing xubuntu-desktop instead and Xfce is indeed a bit
faster on this low-spec PC.

How can I now remove GNOME?

The hard disk is only 16G, so I don't have disk space to burn.
