Default STORAGE USB

Good evening,
I shall like knowing how a USB device of storage is managed under Debian and more generally under LINUX.
Apparently LINUX seems to assimilate the USB to a shape of SCSI. How do you do to mount or umount a USB storage device. With DBIAN there is no modification of the file /etc/fstab when you connect a USB storage device.
Thank you for your illumination.
Regards.
Alex
